I wanted to tell you guys that I finished my in-tank screen cleaning. It was, of course, completely clogged, but cleaned up nicely. I still can't figure out how that screen fits in with the fuel pick-up line but it must.
The recessed tank plug was in fact 22mm, which I spun out with a 22mm nut and a breaker bar. I thought big chunks of slime and funk would flow out of the tank but it didn't. There was still a couple gallons left in the tank as the car was on a bit of an incline. I guess the chunks are in there. I put in 4 gallons of fresh fuel and went for a ride. The car is still slower than I think it should be(I have not driven another MB diesel to compare) but it runs smoother and drives nicer. Next chance I get I will fill the tank and put in some of that biocide. Next up will be an oil change, and a diesel purge and filters.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice, I really appreciate it.
