Re: [diesel_mercedes] Beggar Warning

Guys,

And I thought I was cheap!  Geez, it was only a dollar!  As if you guys have never been given anything!

And Chip, if I were in the position of having to beg for gas, a dollar certainly wouldn't get me very far, so I'd be hitting others up, too.

I think one of the axioms is:  "to whom much is given, much is expected."  If you feel like you've not been given much, then not much is expected, and a dollar certainly isn't much!

I used to work in Hollywood.  I'd pass the same beggar/guy every day on the same corner on my way home from work.  I had/wanted to go shopping in Hollywood one Saturday.  I saw the same beggar coming out of an upscale store with a shopping bag, wearing a nicer leather jacket than I had!  Ya know at least when I was in San Francisco the beggar down on the pier was honest...his sign clearly stated that he was going to spend your money on wine and a hooker.

Several yrs ago in Arlington, TX I was approached by someone at a gas station begging for just a dollar because they were out of gas.  I went ahead and gave him a buck.  He even asked how to repay me.  I told him he had to pass it on to the next person that was in need.  I don't really know why I was compelled to give him a dollar, as I was out of work at the time and I wouldn't do it again, and I never did before...I'm OK with whatever he did with it...I believe in Karma.

It's a sign of the times that we are living through, but in cites beggars are popping up everywhere. I thought I would relate to you their latest technique to pry you loose from your hard earned money in hope that you will be better prepared than I was to their willy ways.

So this guy comes up to me as I am making my way into a store. He is holding an empty gas can, ask me for a dollar, says he is out of gas. I hesitated, but then gave him a dollar. I did not feel good about my donation because something told me that I had just played into a scam.

Not quiet into the store I needed to walk past this person with no legs sitting quietly in his wheel chair just at the entrance. He made no attempt to solicit anything, yet I found myself giving him a 20 and feeling entirely good about my donation.

After a little while in the store I made my way back to my car, and just on the other side of the parking lot I saw the guy with the gas can, running up to some other unprepared person with the same story he had used to fleece me. I was not happy to watch this repeat performance.

So, don't say you have not been warned about these donations that you can be compelled to make that leave you feeling empty and taken.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Still looking for transmission info

Maybe Transtar?  I just finished my first complete AT overhaul this past fall.  Not complex, just take time, pictures, and pay attention to details.

www.transtar1.com

They were great to work with.  There is a list to determine what trans you have, catalog pages with pictures to get parts, tech manuals, etc.

[diesel_mercedes] 240D reoccuring failure

My 1983 240D has a later seriel # engine than the body and has a larger than stock altinator. I bought it 3 years ago and drove it for 2 years and 20,000 miles before the accessory pulley sheared the 5 bolts that mount it to the shimmy damper. I had the damaged pully and radiator fan replaced by a respected independant Mercedes mechanic. 1 year and 12,000 miles later it happened again. Both times I was on the highway and had been driving 65 for about an hour. The engine has a shimmy damper and no balance plate. Has anyone else encountered this problem? What is the soulution? There must be some known issues because the configuration of the damper/ballance plate appears to have changed 3 times over the model run. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Art

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: this could be a bargain too

Chuck:

In the 300SD (at least the 126 version) the speedo is electrical, not mechanical.  But the odo runs mechanically off of the electrical speedo signal.  So you can have speedo with failed ODO.

The ODO mechanical failure is pretty common, and the fix (it is usually all the same thing) is well documented, with pictures, on places like Diesel Giant, or Mercedessource, etc.

Mostly it involves careful opening up and regluing of one specific part that comes loose on a shaft.

But since my speedo works, and the odo doesn't, I am guessing that it is mechanical with the gears. I will check the fuse anyway. Can't hurt.

I think he's got one...it looks familiar, but at that price it's worth it to get one "just in case"....OMG am I turning into a pack rat??? :)

Might get one of these while you are at it. The one that was removed may be lost or broken in the process. I likely sent the one from the old car but not sure if it was in the bag or not. Have Kevin check the bag for a bushing as well. It's likely worn but may work 'till you get the replacement.

Yep, that's the one I sent the link to.  Kevin saw it over the weekend and "thinks" it's the right one.

I'm not loyal to any particular parts house.  I'll go with whatever company has all of the parts I need at the right price.  I hate shopping I want it over and done with, but at the best price.  I'll sit here with 4 or more windows opens and compare before I make a choice.
