RE: [diesel_mercedes] Rebuilt Starter

Max – regarding your cold starting issue.  Mercedes had a block heater that

operated off 110V.   Was this their thinking – keep it warm so it was easier

on the starter?

Do you have a good auto or truck electrical specialty shop that could do a

check on the starter vs.  a rebuild, Bosch or otherwise.

My 220d when it is cold 30's 40's cranks over and starts, no starter problems.

When in doubt, throw money at it.

Its a Shucks lifetime, re-built Bosch and I think they must not replace the big spring. When the car is warm it starts on the first pop. Yea, should of would of could of bought a Mercedes, but I had enough of Mercedes dealers with my 190D. Max  P.S. starters are a whole lot easier on non turbos to replace.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Review of LED Voltmeter

Bobby, what's 1/2 a digit? Is it split top to bottom or left to right?

Tried it at night.  The LEDs are brighter than I would like, but was not distracting.  It was OK.

Clarification: the meter is called an LED.  I'm not sure. They are red, but not little round dots - they are long segments like the old gas discharge tubes but in red.  (There are red dots for the periods.)

Personal preference: The display is 3 digits.  I would have preferred 3 1/2 or 4 digits.

PRO:
Seems to be accurate.  I will try to validate against a good meter.

When I first turn ignition on, it shows battery voltage.  After cranking, it shows alternator voltage.

Lights are bright enough to read in daytime.  I will report after night usage.

It has a nice long cord, so you can pick a spot you like.

Comes with a fairly large piece of double stick tape.  Not used yet.  Currently sits on a small ledge.

Can be switched to another car.

Price was incredible - $6.80 delivered.

CON:
Case is a little bit larger than the display.

Does not show cranking voltage.  Not a defect - the cigarette lighter is not powered when cranking.

Summary:
I love it.

“…maybe with the battery cell acid test.” means using a hydrometer to measure the density of the Acid.  Bill in Orehon

Lawrence et al,

I've been testing my battery/ charging system too lately, with the plug
in volt meter and the load tester. The load tester also has a charging
system area on the meter. It says to hold the switch for 15 secs and see
where the meter drops to, for load, depending on the load capacity of
the battery, ours are the highest ones.

Everything tests fine sometime, and doesn't later on.

I've cleaned all the connections, including the ground the tranny bolt,
which may have helped.

Right now, I think my battery is on the weak side of good, and the
charging system is a little weak.
Bosch factory rebuilt alt, replaced the voltage regulator w/ bosch,
though the other looked fine when removed.

Keep on testing, maybe with the battery cell acid test.

I'm not sure if it is a weak battery on the edge or a weak alternator. It starts and charges with an occasional scare when it just goes to battery voltage. So maybe it's a combination of both. If you have a weak battery your alternator will work harder. If your alternator is not doing it's job it will ruin your battery.....I just don't want to buy both. I'm going to give my battery a load test today. I have one of those 100 amp load testers with the big cords & clips I got from Harbor Freight. Wonder how much time to get a good test. The tester has a momentary switch. Lawrence Rhodes
