[diesel_mercedes] sudden tranny failure

Complete (with convertor) flush and fill with filter made no difference. There was a light swarf in the pan but NO metal dust. The swarf looked like it was from friction component wear. It goes into first and reverse just fine. But does not shift out of first. I can get up to about 25 mph and let off the pedal and it coasts but does not up shift. I believe it is staying in first and just coasting. I have no reason to believe catastrophic failure has occurred - meaning that the heavy parts are still in good condition. But while describing it to a friend It occurred to me that the problem may be the centrifugal pressure regulator that is used to indicate to the mechanism the vehicle speed. That would explain why it goes into gear but does not upshift. Anyone had any experience with those. IIRC, they can be accsesed by removing the rear housing which can be done on the vehicle.

Any thoughts?

Yes, and I have this chilling effect as if there is impending doom. Does any one know if a clutch pedal can be fitted to these wagons. I know the sedans can be so fitted. But I don't know about the wagons. A W123 is not always a W123. I have a line on a 240D with a manny tranny. Just wondering.

It is an 81 300TD (automatic). I am about to go look at it.  I haven't noticed any parts or fluids although it was "a quart" low. What trips me up is the suddenness of it all. No warnings of any kind. I will let you all know what I find.  Wiish me luck.

Not familiar with the auto trans in most of these.  If a vac modulator, could
be a rubber line came off.  (had that happen to me and had the same problems as you describe)
Check linkage as Bill mentions.  Try the simple first.  Did you try shifting manually?

I will Guess it is something in the shifting linkage; that covers a lot of area. Start underneath at the transmission and follow the linkages back to the firewall.
Also look in your driveway for washers or a piece of cotter pin (small though).

Guys:
I pulled into my driveway at about 5:00/pm today and all was well. Car worked as usual all day. At 9:00\pm I got in to go to the store and it simply would not shift into second. It would shift out of first - but not into Second. or any other gear. Thinking back, I may have heard a snap or pop as I pulled into the driveway, but I am not sure.  I know this is not a lot of info. But any observations are appreciated. I will check vacuum and shift cables tomorrow in the daylight. I will probably pull the pan and replace the filter screen as well. Could it be a piston?  I hate to lose this wonderful old beast after so many years of such reliable service. Of course I can probably find another tranny. And I will if I have to. I love this old lady. But any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Bogy.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] sudden tranny failure

Bogy,

Hopefully yours is something simple, yet when I lost 3rd & 4th, it didn't come back. Something spun inside. Check all the obvious external things 1st, then check the fluid. Mine was full of metal flakes. Luckily I was able to find a used tranny, and cleaned out all the lines/ tranny cooler etc, before attaching the new to me tranny. Now after 60K that used tranny is close to shot, so I need a rebuild.

Note, I have the 722.416 Tranny
