RE: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator voltage, What do you get?

Rob – those numbers look good.  Battery with full charge is 13.2 volts.

And with no load at idle, alternator should be 14.1 volts.

Check your connections from battery to ground,  and any ground straps

from chassis to block.   Your starter motor connection, plus any

ground straps, wires that are mounted on the chassis.  Amazing what clean

connections will do on a DC system.

GM has / had serious electrical problems on their truck /SUV products.  Caused

all sorts of dash warning lights, no starts, etc.  Mostly due to loose and

dirty grounds.  And there are about 8 of them, some easy to access and some not.

good luck Rob

I see why this Alternator was on sale for $80, as it's a 'return', sold as new/rebuilt, where someone took out the Bosch voltage regulator and replaced it with some unknown, home repaired brush, regulator. WTF. Regular price is $147 on Amazon.

Being that I wasn't going to swap out today, and the old one was out of the car, I brought the old one to the FLAP to check, and the old Alternator tested fine, 14+volts on there machine. I decided to check/clean all the connections & grounding areas.

After 1st cleaning all connections and grounding areas, I got Idle 12.7v, tops 13.67v.

I charged the battery all the way, and got some better numbers: idle 13.9v, tops, 14.0v

It drops with the headlights & fan running: Idle 12.58v, tops 13.7v.

What voltage are these MBs supposed to get? What do you get?

Thanks

Please take and post photos of it, I'm keen to see if it comes with a pulley and if so, which one as this alternator fits a slew of Mercedes' up to the 1993 model year .

I'm looking for a junk alternator to grab a good used single sheave pulley off of .

The alt I'm replacing is a Bosch rebuilt from 10yrs and 100,000 miles ago.

Should be here this week, so I'll try to swap it out this weekend.

O.K. then .

The original 55 Amp. one is the AL80X, not very popular these days .

A 65 Amp. direct replacement is AL117X, you use your old pulley and this one fits various Mercedes up to the 1992 year model so it should be cheap to find  a good used one and slap in a new BOSCH brand regulator and be off to the races with brighter lights and better charging, best of all it fits the original brackets .

I expect to install one of these on an OM617 engine very soon so maybe wait to make sure I know what I'm talking about before $pending any Lolly .

[diesel_mercedes] Charging Voltage, What do you get?

Therein is why I insist on only BOSCH regulators ~ none of the other brands (I tried a lot of different ones) ever charged more than 13.5 VDC .

The system is designed for 14 V. but unless nothing else is using current, it's rare to reach that actual voltage .

Cleaning the 35 + year old grounds is time consuming but helps a great deal as does adding secondary grounds .
