Lawerence, Do you remember what brand of injector line heaters you
bought? Even if people have other heaters, they are a good "insurance
policy". Thank you for the good report on your 7 years of expeience.

I've heard it's changed a bit since I left(GG) in 1970. I might want to live and grow a garden in Robs back yard now though. Yea, lets design some cool Diesel Mercedes Plaques, any artists in our group?, Max

I'm also curious about how often to change the filter during Nate's Mondo Flush program...

I *think* I posted a before and after PS filter pic in my album "Betty and the Beginner" for grins....

The first and last ones , are aftermarket add to the return hose things you don't want , EVER .

The others that all look the same ? just buy the cheapest one and use it .

For now , once you ever so carefully wipe the upper & lower resivoirs clean with _ONLY_LINT_FREE_TOWELS_ , you can then drop in a new filter and flush it a bit , then leave it until spring and flush some more , once the fluid remains translucent red and sweet smelling then change the filter again and from there you should be good to go annually .

I hope this clarifies things for you .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : "Routine" Old Mercedes Service & Repairs

Glad it helped .

I'd suggest getting a steno pad and a pencil that'll fit in it's coiled spring , keep a running list of notes , parts needed etc. and cross them off as you go .

Separate lists for the P-A-P things like : spare fuel line hose clamps , spare blue colored radiator drain plug & gasket .....

By making lists and comparing prices , you can shop 'round the InterNet when it's cold / rainy out and you're slurping coffee with Kevin & the cats ......

Always buy more fuel filters and chemicals than you think you'll need when they're on sale , keep spare fuel filters & the special fuel hose clamps in the glovebox so you never have to have the fun Chip did late at night , far from home....

I also keep bottles of my fuel additives and engine oils , ATF in the trunk's sidewells , they're plastic so the normal water puddles there won't hurt them .

If you carefully remove the black plastic trunk side liners , you'll find greasy filthy water there in the bottom , use an old sponge or towel to mop dry then *gently* poke the round rubber ' drain' (yeah , right) tube thingie open so most of the water might leak out next time .

I also wash under there once or twice a year as a little bit of dust buildup turns into mud & clogs the drain valve thingie nearly instantly .

I hope this helps , being pragmatic and diligent will get you where you want to be , Mercedes is a *perfect* farm vehicle as this philosophy dovetails well with country / farm life .

Not what most people are willing to invest in a 28 year old car , especially not a beat up one like mine .

You have been warned ! .

-Nate
Bobby Warned :

Trish,

Using SVO - the waste oil Kevin is collecting - in a MB diesel is a wonderful idea, whether it is your car or the future generator.

BUT:

Other than a five minute demonstration - do not use room temperature or colder SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) to fuel your MB. It will destroy your motor. It does this in several ways. The cold oil is too viscous, so the injectors are not able to atomize the oil well. The oil clogs the injectors, so they keep doing a poorer and poorer job. Since the oil is in large droplets, some of it doesn't burn. It slides down the cylinder wall and collects behind the rings and forms carbon "chunks". These prevent the rings from working properly. The oil also gets past the rings drips down into the pan. It is incompatible with the motor oil, dilutes it and destroys the bearings.

You must add a system or systems to heat the SVO before it is pumped into the injection pump. Many people also add a small tank for diesel. They crank the engine on diesel and run on it briefly until the coolant warms enough to warm the SVO to 140F. Then they switch to SVO. (When they are ready to shut down, they switch back to diesel so the engine is ready start up next time.)

(It is also possible to use electrical heaters to warm the oil when cranking up, so you don't have to switch fuels.)
