Re: [diesel_mercedes] Emergency Breakdown Help

Chip,

I know a lot less than your mechanic, but I would say that it would be OK to drive your car, if you are careful to check the oil very frequently.  If you think you are using 2 quarts in 200 miles, then you should stop and check the oil every 50 miles.

That way, you can get to the mechanic recommended.

I bought a part at the dealer in Little Rock and they seemed OK, but that is not much help

Hope you make it back to NC with your engine intact.

I have driven it about 200 miles after finding the motor and undercarrage wet with oil. It threw out about two quarts in the 200 miles.

I had been driving it pretty hard through Texas down to New Orleans, 80+ most of the way. The car still runs fine, oil pressure is good, only a oil leak.

Where do I start searching for this leak? It could certainly be the front seal, but I would not think it would throw that kind of oil out. In the morning I'll try and dry it off and let it run to see if I can find something, but some good guesses from you guys would sure be helpful about now.

Dare I continue on my journey using more oil than fuel?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Emergency Breakdown Help

Chip,

I had a serious oil leak in my 300SD a couple of years ago.  Gallons of oil pouring out, being slung all over the engine compartment.

First, be aware that if the leak is in the front, the fan and any belts it gets on will spew it everywhere.  So NOTHING short of finding the leak is a good indicator of where it's coming from.

Mine turned out to be a cut in the hose carrying oil to the oil cooler.  This is a true pain in the ass to fix, since doing it right means lifting the engine OFF of the left side engine mount (the hoses to and from the oil cooler route through a clamp that is on the side of the engine and hard pipe sections of these 'hoses' have to be snaked through some areas that are impossible without lifting the engine.

CLEAN it all.  Then look carefully at hose ends and any connection that might spew oil.  Then look at the hoses themselves.  This is going to be much easier to address than a front seal on the engine.

If you've just had engine work, why would a front seal go out?  A seal leak should be pretty obvious, once you get things cleaned.

Look at the oil pan and gasket.  Is it possible that you hit something, and caused a leak in the front of the pan or gasket?  This will be terribly messy, but a new pan and gasket isn't expensive or particularly time consuming to install.

If it's a hose cut (my hose shifted and go sliced by the power steering pulley), you can do a temporary fix.  I went to Pep Boys (any auto parts house should do) and got a "gasket repair kit". This was a blister pack with 6" x 6" squares of various gasket materials.  I cut out a section of the rubber square (probably actually neoprene or some other synthetic rubber) and put it over the cut and clamped it down with a hose clamp.  For this job, I wanted a hose clamp that had holes in it, so the rubber would squeeze through as the clamp tightened, and thus be less prone to slip out.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic oil.  Very slippery.  Even with deep cleaning of the hose, the clamp and rubber piece wanted to slide sideways.  It took a while to get it positioned right.

Once it was positioned, it stayed in place for more than a month of leak free driving, until I could convince Nate to actually crawl under, get the engine lifted off the engine mount, and install the new hoses (I replace both, even though only one was cut).

You might find that one of the oil return tubes, around the turbo and air cleaner, has been nicked or just knocked out of its proper place.  This seems less likely with the consumption you report, but you have to check it out.  Also look for any other pipe around the engine that carries oil.

Don't overlook the oil cooler.  On my Dodge crewcab, on a trip a decade ago through Idaho and other mountain states, the trans oil cooler decided to start spewing trans fluid.  It was a break in the middle of the cooler.  Rare, but not impossible.  Again, this is something that you will only find after thorough cleaning, so that you can see where the oil originates.

You're going to have to invest in some cans of engine degreaser and find a self-wash car wash or some other place with a hose that you can run over the engine after you have sprayed it down with degreaser.  This is messy, and it takes WAY MORE cans of degreaser than you want to pay for.  But it works wonders for finding problems.

For what it's worth, "worse on the driver's side" means worse on the side with the oil cooler and with the oil cooler hoses.

Please keep us posted on what you find.

Alan,

The oil cap is in place and is not where and oil leak, but I do appreciate the suggestion.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Emergency Breakdown Help

Guys,

I have just called my mechanic back in NC who did extensive work on the car this past spring. He is thinking that it is the front oil seal, but is not sure. He is suggesting I get a dye from the auto parts store to try and see where it is leaking. He also suggested I get something called engine oil stop leak and said it might slow the leak to some extent.

He also advised me not to drive the car until I find and stop the leak. Do those suggestions sound right? Where is my oil pressure sensor gauge? He suggested this should be checked as a possible location of the leak.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: No Secrets!

Max I got a good deal from my friend, he wanted his car to go to a good place and be well taken care of......

As for the car I figure realistically I will have put about $5K into the car and it will be in great condition, new paint, reconditioned interior, and it will last me the rest of my life.

I am trying to impress upon my daughters the value of buying used but dependable cars, and saving the monthly payments for things like houses and such........

It just makes so much sense for us to keep these mercedes cars going, and I do what I can but work keeps me out more than I wish. So, instead of driving one of those plastic, lightweight high priced cars that takes 5 years of payments to pay for......I choose to drive a classic. It may get a little less gas mileage, and be a little slower off the start, but it drives so well, and rides like a dream. And it has an option that the new cars don't have....it is PAID FOR!

I swear, when I open up the sunroof in the summer, and am driving down the road and feeling the wind while I am sailing on concrete there is just nothing quite like it. I literally laugh, my wife thinks I am a nut, and I love my car too much, but it has....personality. She treats me well, never falters, demands constant attention, yet performs magnificently. She is a classic. Just like my wife.........but some how she does not appreciate my sentimentality in the same way........chuckling.

Sounds like you got a very good deal and have a nice car. Was your friend good to you on the price? But some things just crack me up. Like , we keep hearing about how the most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Mercedes and I keep reading from guys who buy cheap Mercedes and then dump vast sums of money into them. I like the idea of buying one already in nice shape and not dumping piles of money into them. Max

I know...painful, right? I can sort of see why he's frustrated, but he's paid a mechanic to do everything except the new glow plugs (which we did together, and that's what started my love affair...or disease...however you see it lol), even put in a new air filter. oy.

It *is* a wagon, and it's got a (single tank) Lovecraft WVO system in it already (which looks pretty janky to me, but seems to work ok).

He bought it while in Cali, didn't have it checked out before the purchase (yes, we all learn this lessons so painfully, we just got royally ripped off on a Saab) and then the rear axle needed replacing on the way home to Santa Fe...somewhere in AZ. I think that was $1500 in "emergency repair".

The rest was probably: tires, valve adjustment, compression test (not stellar, but decent for this altitude he was told), new motor mounts, new battery, fuel filter maint, and some other stuff I don't know about...chasing cold start problems and a rough idle/engine shake (he still has these symptoms)

It really seems like some inexpensive well placed DIY repairs would put the wagon in decent shape. He did get it started today after 4 solid tries, so I think he's hopeful once again ;) Even if it's another $1k....hopefully it's all (or nearly so) DIY level stuff. I'll walk him through getting on the list and he can speak for himself :)

We all love to get good deals on these cars...I paid $1850, then $200 to have it checked top to bottom. She's got some dents, interior and electrical, and she'll probably never again look totally sexy and sharp...but I'm betting (almost literally here) that she'll be solid. So far I have between $3000-$3500 in her and a laundry list of exciting nerdy things to keep me busy.

Spring...I yearn for you!
