[diesel_mercedes] Tranny Failure

Yes, they do .

I don't have the tech tips that describe how to add a pressure gauge and test drive it but it's apparently a common thing to have too much pressure, causing bang shifts .

I wonder if these transmissions have test points. There are, on some transmissions, threaded plugs to check pressures at various points.
But I'll wager there is someone in your area who might have the smarts to figure this one out. It might be something as simple as a misplaced shaft sleeve or seal ring.
You might try swapping just the valve body.

Quality of the drive is important.
My understanding is that there is nothing like the original transmission for a vehicle.
My concern is by abandoning it I may regret it.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Tranny Failure

Well, unless you're talking about a numbers-matching, '57 fuel-injected Corvette, there's no sense or reason to keep the original transmission if that  transmission refuses to operate correctly.  These are mass-produced cars, after all, and that transmission was not made solely for that specific car.

If you need another transmission, I still have the one out of the '83 TD I parted out a dozen years or so ago.  It came out of a car that was totaled, and drove/shifted just fine.  I'm in Centennial; the transmission is near 68th and Washington.  I'll let it go super cheap....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Tranny Failure

There is indeed nothing like an original transmission that can't be rebuilt.  If the transmission has to be massively rebuilt, it is no longer the original transmission.  In most cases major components will be replaced which would make the original transmission a different transmission in any case.  The case being the main component most likely to be retained.  Sorry for the bad pun.

I haven't heard, "that there is nothing like the original transmission for a vehicle."

My original Tranny is sitting in my garage, ever since it broke years ago. Sometime, I'll have it it rebuilt or use it as a core, as my current used tranny is pretty shot.

Right now, too busy with the Van.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Tranny Failure

I'd pick up a junkyard trans and then have the mechanic go through it.  The net added cost would be small compared to putting it in and then finding problems.

Need to decide whether to abandon the original transmission to my 82 300D and go to a junk yard salvage one.

My Mercedes mechanic has given up.
He put the transmission together 2 or 3 times.
Tried every trick he new from his years at the dealership.
I have about 500,000 miles on this car and have owned it for 20 years.

Questions:
Do Mercedes transmissions just die like this?
Should I see if someone else wants to give it a try or abandon it?
My biggest question is - how sorry would I be if I plan on keeping the car another 20 years if I abandoned the old transmission and went to the best junk yard transmission I could find.
