Nate I bought a non Mercedes valve cover gasket & could not get it to stay in place so re used the old one, have not looked yet to see if it has any leaks.
You continue to be an inspiration, I am sure that there are many who would have given up on these cars if you were not there cheer leading.

Maybe you just need to turn it (the idle) up a little bit.  Does the tach(ometer) work?  Do you know where it's idling at now?

'Could be it just needs that rack bolt, as mentioned by someone smarter 'n me here earlier....

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : Idle rough at traffic lights

Maybe you're just cute ?

Matter of opinion.  Kevin thinks so.  I think they follow me because it's a cool classic car or it's because it smokes!  Or they are bored and have nothing better to do.  In this county they are always looking for a reason to hand out a ticket. I've been super careful now that I don't have a speedometer cable.  BTW that's why it was jumping before...the cable was kinked and finally broke.

my psychotic b*tch ex GF was unbeleivably sexy & cute , she drove sans license for many years and was always getting hit up by horny Cops , never a ticket though .

Doesn't work for me.  I got pulled over several years ago right here in this po dump town.  Got a ticket for late inspection. I cried, for real, I don't know how to put on the water works. I was upset and told the cop, "I've been out of work, I just got a job at IHop" He said "Good you'll earn tips and can pay this ticket"!  The next day another cop did a U-turn in the exact same place, I waved the ticket out the window telling him "I know, I know you guys got me yesterday!"  Sure they "dismissed" the ticket once I got the car inspected, for a "court fee"!

And on the idle...it doesn't do it all the time and not if I move it to neutral or park, or keep my foot on the accelerator a tiny bit.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] The Story

(Best story yet is Nate in LA's, wherein SHE introduced HIM to Mercedes diesels. Formerly "VWNate", he now has no VW's, and between the two of them, they now have, what.., four or five Mercedes diesels...? That's just awesome!)

Mark in Lakewood, CO

It was me that did all the research and wanted the diesel Mercedes.  Kevin kept thinking I was being snobby for wanting one.  I was on the way to talking him into getting one...until this ordeal.  Some day I'll get a different car and show him they aren't all like this one.

It all started years ago when we used to catch a show on Sunday morning around 9:30am. These people from Australia crossed the USA using no gas or "normal" fuel.  They used bio, veggie and what ever it took.  Research showed the diesel is the best motor, Mercedes being top.

Find some kid who's got time & $$ as they're very good cars even if NA , kinda slow , not worth a penny even after restoration so DO NOT buy it your ownself .

Tom and I were looking at a nice one Sunday in P-A-P , nice paint and it didn't even have the usual sun cooked & split interior .

Dunno what he is asking, but it has sat in a field for a while. Any advice would be welcome.

Did you get it resolved yet? There must be 100 independent shops in the area who can help.

We were occasionally having a small problem with the ignition not turning to the
start position.  It's usually solved by pulling out the key, reinserting and
then it will go to the start position.  She's tried a hundred times.  Is there a
reliable locksmith or mechanic in Newport Beach that could take a look at it?

I'm in L.A. and came come look at it after dark.....

2 two 3 , seven one 9 2 , 2 56 .

It sounds to me like you're going to need at least a new Dealer key if not a new ignition tunbler , the Dealer will sell you the correct one with matching key profile , or Tom @ The Classic Center in Irvine .

[diesel_mercedes] The Story

Well ;

We're down to three now , the 300CD Turbo Sports Coupe , the ever reliable and freezing cold in Death Valley 240D Sedan and her Euro. spec. 300TD Turbo wagon with scads of options I'd rather it not have .

A couple VW's still reside @ Jr's house if you should want to buy any , I still have a house & yard littered with old VW air cooled parts i want rid of , they're as bad as the damn squirrels .

-Nate
Mark Opined :

Perhaps you could take a page from Brian in LaVerne's playbook: "Look what I bought cha, honey. Now, we EACH have a classic Mercedes diesel!" Worth a shot, anyway....

Expect to do them again in 3,000 +/- miles as once tight , they tend to carbon up so once they're closing properly , they chip away the carbon and become tight again....

DO NOT glue that gasket ! .

Just wipe the cover super clean before you begin adjusting and then by the time you're done wipe off the additional oil seeps and the gasket will remain more or less in place , the more often you do this , the easier it gets .

Wow !

Good old unregulated TEXAS ! .

No where else are you allowed to go near those stacks of semi - crushed cars and grab parts .

For those who don't know , these stacks have a tendency to slip and fall over , crushing the unwary , in less time that you can blink .

Once the headlights are on , you can pull the same knob OUT one click to work them .

They only work in low beam .

The bulbs are inexpen$ive and available anywhere , just remember to always wipe the glass of the bulb clean with tissue paper else it'll burn out shortly .

You _DO_NOT_ look stupid ! stupid is not asking when you really want to be stylin' with them on =8-) .
