[diesel_mercedes] Re: Troubleshooting A/C - W123 1984 240D

So far so good ;

I'm not really familiar with the basic factory AC in our '82 240D but I assume there's a relay in there some where , if it goes bad you'll get just this symptom so if no power (of conversely , power but no ground at one leg of the MPC) to the compressor connection , I'd go looking for the AC relay .

Yes , you can change the clutch complete on the R4 compressor , back when your car was new it was a really common repair , I had to do many as well as the ceramic compressor seal that failed a lot .

Requires a special tool I assume is cheap or loanable from your FLAPS .
Mind the threads as you turn the tool into the clutch ! if they're damaged they can ruin the inside threads causing you a peck of extra work and $ when you replace the whole compressor .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Finding Oil leaks.

Often the oil leaks out 12" or further from where it appears or where it drips off the engine ~ it'll follow seams , joints and evewn casting edges .

I like to clean the mess up and allow to dry then puff some talcum powder on the affected area and start it up , the talc will turn dark the instant the oil hits it and help locate the weep .

Hitting spilled oil or Diesel Fuel whilst riding a Moto is *very* exciting but never much fun .

[diesel_mercedes] Troubleshooting A/C - W123 1984 240D

Troubleshooting A/C - W123 1984 240D

Symptoms:
- compressor clutch will not engage
- blower fan works fine
- no blown fuses
- freon pressure good
- pressure sender switch is ON
- external condenser fan works fine

What I have done so far:
- checked freon pressure - good
- jumped pressure switch wires - nothing
- checked pressure switch resistance - switch is ON
- turned the controller switches inside the car on an off multiple times - nothing
- turned the temp wheel from OFF to MAX multiple times - nothing

What I figure I have to do now:
Check and see if voltage is getting to compressor clutch

If yes - then clutch must be the problem
If no - then it's probably in the controller or mystery box, or less likely, wiring

Does this sound like I'm going in the right direction?

Also, if it turns out to be the compressor clutch, can I swap that out separately or do I have to put a whole new compressor on it?

Thanks y'all,

Jim

Thanks all, I was sort of hoping that there was a filter kit that I could buy. I hear you Nate re bikes, we are talking about a very slow leak, probably less than a pint in 2,000 miles. I just want to clean it up.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Non starting 300 TD

truck stops sell cases and cases of regular rubbing alcohol in northers states in the winter to de-ice diesel  fuel lines.

I believe it needs to be ethyl alcohol (grain) as methanol and isopropyl will settle the entrained water out and you don't want that in the fuel system. Indeed, the rest of the bottle of Everclear will make a nice toddy!

Am sure you have thought of this, but try adding a cup of alcohol into the fuel tank. If there is any water accumulated the alcohol will take it into solution with the fuel, and allow it to burn off.
Tony
If that doesnt work, just drink the rest of the alcohol.

Loss of pressurized oil would be a stream not a drip.  Check to see if the leak is running down the filter canister from the top or if it is a fitting on the bottom.  If leak originates at the top, it could be a pinched o-ring.

First thing is to diagnose the source of the leak , if you haven't the time right now , take it to an indie shop as oil leaks have a way of suddenly becoming oil waterfalls with resultant catastrophic failure .

As I'm a Motocyclist I urge you to not drive it but have ot towed or park it until you can get to it was so many crashes are caused by oil leaked on to Public Roads...

Go to Peach Parts or buy MB Parts etc. and use their on line exploded diagrams to see where the various seals , hoses and what not are located before taking anything apart .

The canister typ oil filter has two BIG fittings that once in a while begin weeping , you'll have to loosen the hose joints before you can snug up those fittings , work cautiously here as expen$ive damage is easy to cause .

My car is dripping oil from underneath the oil filter, I can make the time to fix it when we are in Mexico this winter, (no time now, house building) It does not go through much oil, but it looks like it is leaking gallons per mile.
In Mexico cannot buy the parts for the fix, what should I take with me?
