First thing :
*CAREFULLY * remove the long vacuum pipe between the engine and brake booster , most models have a metal support you *MUST* undo else you'll break it when it flexes .
Then , remove the brass conector that attaches the pipe to the vacuum pump being _SURE_ to use only a 6 point socket (either 17 or 19 MM , I forget right now) , wipe all the oil & dirt off it and try to blow through it both ways ~ my bet is : it'll blow both ways and it shouldn't do this as it's a one way check valve , often the disc either has a groove worn in it so it leaks or the disc crumbles and falls inside the pump further complicating things ~ if the valve is wide open & blows both ways , start the engine and let it run a while , have a nice hot cuppa while you watch the open pump like a hungry hawk watches a mouse , rev. the engine occasionally , in due time you'll see tiny bits of crud (the disc remenants) come flying out of the open pump , stop the engine and replace the check valve with a new (or used) one and marvel at how it now reaches 20" of vacuum 30 seconds or less after you start the engine .
Don't stop the engine as soon as you see the first bit of crud come flying out , Tom's car had multiple bits of dead valve disc in it that kept cloggng the new valve we put in , frustating as it'd check out fine but loose vacuum as he was driving , this caused hard brakes and greatly increased pedal effort....
Be VERY careful to not allow any dirt or crud to fall inside the pump as you're working on it ~ this is why I always try to keep my engine clean , it facilitats repairs .
Like most mechanical repairs , first thing is proper diagnosis then you have to address the various bits in the proper order to achive satisfactory results ~ as soon as you have good vacuum , the rest will follow faster & easier / better than you think .

Vacuum pump is coming off for a rebuild this weekend, though. Vac gauge was mostly wobbly and only a few inches. Probably just enough for it to shut off. Brake boost also very weak. At least I can work on the pump in the basement. I ordered their catalog. Lots of good stuff on their website.

Of the front of the engine.....
Just use your ignition key , my 84/85 TD's tailgate only unlocks by vacuum if the engine is running so it's a two handed affair to open it after it sits a couple days .
You have to hold the key turned as far as it'll go whilst you press in the button and lift the tailgate .

Hi Nate,
I'll take another look. Nasty weather here in central NJ for the next few days. Don't know when I'll get back to the car. Drove it around the neighborhood a bit yesterday. Vacuum pump is coming off for a rebuild this weekend, though. Vac gauge was mostly wobbly and only a few inches. Probably just enough for it to shut off. Brake boost also very weak. thanks,

Subject: Re: [diesel_mercedes] Trunk & Fuel Flap Locked Out
Not panicing quite yet.
But this is my daily driver.
Wife has her car.
I and a friend both tried to turn the key in the lock either way and it will not turn. You see I have always locked my trunk with the vacuum system the only key I have is the ignition key I assume that is the only key needed.
I too took out the back seat bottom and found a tube and wire running to the front of the car on the drivers side near the door.
From what others discussed the vacuum might still be working and that is what is holding the spring loaded locks closed. I was wondering if instead of pulling it out from under the front seat I could go under the hood and disconnect the tube that is running back on the same side thru the firewall and suck on it. Will that work? this will keep the integrety of the vacuum system back thru the cabin to the trunk. BTW When I look at the tubes running thru the firewall they all seem to be clear/yellowing tubes not yellow green and black. Also the tube running under the back seat is black tube not yellow with green stripe.
Well not panicing yet but getting lower on fuel
