175 miles , lotsa me snoozing inside with the AC going whilst SWMBO is shopping or whatnot .
20.7 MPG , we ran out of <magic> Power Service Cetane Boost a few fillups ago and just began adding again with this fillup , it'll be interesting to see how much more MPG's I get if any .
Southern California has been getting raped over fuel prices the last two weeks ~ there was a two day electical problem in *one* refinery
and all the refineries colluded to create another fake ' gas shortage 'and increased the price of RUG to .50 cents more than Diesel fuel even though their own watch dog group said there WAS NO SHORTAGE OF GASOLINE and there's still plenty to ship off shore .
So much for the lie that Diesel fuel costs more to refine , I told you they were lying , they always do .

The plain ones will break , it's just a matter of time .
The better ones are supposed to be difficult to install .
I'd scrap all standard donuts now .

I'll allow one of the Egnieers to explain how the pressure waves inside the primary vacuum tube alow the oil to work it's way from the engine up into the body but trust me , it happens and overhauling the vacuum pump stops it nearly dead .
If the IP's shutoff valve begins leaking , the engine will be *very* slow to stop and , your entire vacuum system will fill with oil and nasty black Diesel fuel contaminated oil will soon begin dripping out of the lower dashboard & onto SWMBO's leg as this failure will surely occurr when she's driving....
I'm *green* with envy ~ none of my cars holds vacum more than two or three days .

13MM 6 point socket on a 8" wobble typ 3/8" drive extension .
Remove that bolt and expect to drop it the first time you do the job.....
It *must* have a flat 8MM washer ! . that too , will fall and be lost .
Sunday I took the whole day off and drove SWMBO 'round in her '82 240D with the R-12 charged AC set to " Meat Locker " , when I spotted a Union 76 filling station in the late afternoon with $4.27 / gallon Diesel fuel , I stopped and filled it , adding three Oz. of Power Service Cetane Boost , checked the underhood fluids and marveled a while at the now repaired air filter and unbroken intake manifold all shaking as the worn out engine idled in gear with the AC on as I checked the ATF .
It used no oil this last tank of fuel , no ATF either .
She'd said we could overhaul both the engne and tranny this past August but Anton's College Car had issues and it's eating up most of that budget dammit .
Work slowly and over a flat cement area Chip , this job is do-able , just a PIA the first time (or three) you do it .
I highly suggest spending slightly more for the hexagonal rubber air cleaner mounts .

Now...I finally got around to switching mine out last week (installing the chain-reinforced, replacing the "wire-loop-temp-fix" installed by the kind stranger) and the new donuts didn't seem to fit as well on the two more forward hooks (just fine on the 2 rear). I get long life out of all my batteries, but then I don't use any of them very much because I don't hardly drive, except house batts, they get used every day,I have averaged 10 years per set for those. I had previously ordered a new mounting bracket for the job but gave up putting on the new bracket when I saw where the bracing bolt mounts underneath the triangular assemble. I mad a couple of tries with a socket and ratchet but decided I would ask this board what works on the removal of that bolt?
What have others used to get that bolt out and put on a new triangular mounting plate?

Oh darn it I've been discovered! LOL
What about the diaphragm in the shutoff valve at the injection pump? Won't that leak oil into the tubes? Car shuts off no problem when the tubes are hooked up so that would indicate that the diaphragm is intact...unless it has a tiny hole...
I don't understand how the vacuum pump can leak oil into the tubes since the air flow should be toward the pump. How can oil move upstream in the air flow?
System holds vacuum...recently left car parked for two weeks and locks opened like magic with a turn of the key. Don't know if leaky shutoff valve diaphragm would let vacuum leak out while parked...(or I should say, let air leak in...)
Will add the fuel filter into the line to see what's happening with that...
Thanks.

It wouldn't shut off today and when I investigated the problem, I discovered the vacuum tube had come loose off the ignition key thingameebob. I put it back on and the engine turns off fine now, but when I did the job, I found black oil inside the vacuum tube. I remember you guys saying something about how it is bad to have your tube dripping black oil and so I thought I would ask about it before I got down on my hands and knees again and crawled back under the dash.

Nate,
This is extremely helpful advise on this job, save one thing. What kind of a wrench combination are you using to get out that lower bolt on this bracket?

[diesel_mercedes] Air Breather Mounting Bracket
I replaced 2 of the bushings holding my air cleaner on Saturday on my 82 300CD Turbo. My third mounting point of the bracket had broken off some years ago but the piece still clung to the air cleaner body.
