Are you sure it's the park brake warning light ?. that's red, there's a brake system light next to it that's yellow and I have the devil of a time keeping that one dark on my grey market wagon....

After a few stops it goes out but I'd rather it never came on .

Just thinking outside the box as you had the hydraulic system apart and that's a common result .

On my '77, the pad wear light is red and it has a ring of outward-pointing little black dashes around it. That one lights sometimes, then slowly fades out. I suspect pads saturated with something slightly conductive. As they warm, they become less conductive and the light slowly extinguishes.
I never had any bleeder screws open, but when pumping the pedal to get the caliper piston free, I was wondering if there was a safety valve in the system like on some American cars. If the pressure in the system is unbalanced, it makes the brake light come on, then you have to open a bleeder on the opposite end of the car, pump lightly until the light just goes out.
Reading on these cars, that does not seem to be the case. The bright red brake warning light is connected to the parking brake and to a float in the master cylinder.
What I think I should do it disconnect the master cylinder float switch and see if that makes the light go out. If not, it is the PB switch.
But now, how does one access the parking brake switch? It looks to be way up on top pf the mechanism.

Hey folks,
I have been driving my car every day. Since I put in the new battery, it
has been a LOT better at starting in the cold even without the heater.
But that is not what this is about. In stages I have been rebuilding the
front suspension. That last thing I did was to replace the lower ball
joints. I ran into a problem with the right caliper when I did that
side. The inner piston would not go in. First, I cleaned up the pad
perches, which were binding the pads. Completely removing them, I could
not get the inner piston to budge. I finally limbered it up by
retracting the outer one, clamping it with a C-clamp, then applying the
brake a few times to make the inner one start to come out. On the second
try, the piston freed and I was able to push it in with no further issue.
So now, I have four fully functioning brake calipers. That one must have
just been going along for the ride.
But now I have a new problem. The parking brake light stays on
sometimes. So far I have removed the rear calipers and checked the
adjustment of the rear shoes. They were a little snug, so I adjusted the
star wheel in just a tad. I then made an adjustment under the car at the
arm just behind the transmission (the adjuster bolt turned with no
issues, don't you just love working on southern cars!). The parking
brake pedal moves just the right distance and the PB grabs nice
(actually always did, but I didn't like the way the shoes were dragging.
The light actually was staying on after I worked on the front brakes and
before I adjusted the rears.
Yanking upward on the PB pedal does no good. I checked the master
cylinder and it is full.
The PD switch looks to be in a horrible place, way up on top of the
mechanism.
Has anyone had luck working on these?

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Parking brake light stays on

Hi Mark.  Is it the "brake lights" or just the dash warning light?  My
83 "warning light" is on intermittently.  I believe it is an
intermittent short in the brake pad warning wire.  Not an issue if the
brake lights on the car aren't involved.

[diesel_mercedes] Monday Evening

Whew, am I sore ! .

I decided to stay home and do some driveway tinkering to - day, I've been wanting to mount my turbo boost pressure gauge on the inside of the 'A' pillar, removed and damaged the A Pillar inside trim a little bit then discovered if I mount the gauge there I won't be able to clean the lower left corner of the windshield..... sigh .

As long as I had the interior trim off I popped the gauge binnacle out and replaced my bad intermittent wiper relay, I also tested my spare relay before binning the original dead one .

All one needs do is : drop the lower dash cover panel, push the binnacle out enough to sneak your _right_ hand in behind it from the upper right coner and un do the speedo cable then the entire gauge binnacle can be slid out *just* enough to get my large (size 4) hand in there and wriggle the relay loose ~ it has a tab on the lower right side to help you install it in the right position even though you cannot see what you're doing . Easy-Peasy .

Two years ago the left front speaker was buzzing so Tom @ The M-B Classic Center ordered me in two new dash speakers, I installed the left one and it works fine, lots and lots of cleaning going on to the various removed plastic parts as the interior of the car is nasty with Diesel Smoot from the bad injectors and generally dirty so I vacuumed both driver's side foot wells ,  disconnected the _bottom_ of the stiff driver's side seat belt, pulled it fully out of the reel and clamped it with clothes pins then sprayed it with Meguiar's #40 Leather and Plastic Cleaner, rubber that in and let it soak a while coiled in a plastic bucket whilst I took the dash and A Pillar apart, later on I used a soft bristle brush and my fingers to really work the accumulated sweat and dust loose, then I rinsed it three times in clean water, each time using the brush, the water turned black the first two rinses, not it's dry and the inertia reel works like new again ~ very nice indeed .

As soon as I release the buckle, it retracts across my chest smoothly and quietly ~ SWEET *:x lovestruck .

The bottom safety belt mount incorporates a clever clock spring that flips the bottom end of the belt that in most Coupes, passengers trip on getting in out out, _backwards_ so it lines up with the floor giving you easy clearance over the sill and is one more example of the amazing amount of good engineering that went into these fine and sturdy cars .

The new speaker is made in Hungary and has a synthetic cone, the original one was paper and had no cracks in it, not sure why it was buzzy/fuzzy sounding .

It's a spring fit, you lever up the _inner_ edge of the speaker, the near edge has a stiff metal tab that locks under the dashboard to hold it rock steady .

The new speakers come with the same polarized harness plugs so you cannot connect it wrong .

I removed and cleaned the driver's side sun visor too then a part of the headliner behind it and the driver's hand grip, once you have the spray bottle of this amazing cleaner/conditioner, in your hand it's hard to stop .

I found that lying on a milk crate when I was under the dashboard helps ease or slow down the onset of the usual back/shoulder pain .

I also took the time to thoroughly wash all the windows inside and out, the recent rains made me realize I'd not washed the inside windows since April when I crashed my Moto, they were greasy .

As always I was closely supervised by Bitch & Gizmo who made sure I took time to give them belly rubs now and then ~ there's an amazing array of old toothbrushes, fingernail brushes and clean cloths necessary to clean Diesel Smoot and frequent trips for cleaner water or fresh rags plus wash my hands yet again meant lots of belly rubs just before I cleaned my hands each time .

There was a lot more but my shoulders and back told me to quit so I closed up and took an hour nap in my new lay flat recliner (*:x lovestruck) , the pups love it *so* much they settle in and don't get up again like they always used to with my other recliners .

Whew, I need to take some acetametophin (SP) and get some sleep .

At least it smokes less, still a bit pulling away from a dead stop though *8-| rolling eyes .

Another set of injectors, this time from local U.D.S. is going in soon ! .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Slushbox

415 miles, 24MPG .

Silver Bottle Diesel Kleen used, I prolly have 10 Oz. in the tank now .

I changed the paper element filter in the fuel return line, it wasn't terribly dirty .

This time I tried a larger, WIX # 3002 (NAPA # 33002) filter to see if it'll help catch more crud or whatever, I had it lying around and decided to use it .

After the Diesel Purge and running it dry Saturday, it's *much* peppier off idle and the shifting is smoother as it takes less throttle to go the same speed now .

I can't see out the greasy back window to see it it's smoking much or just a bit, it still lopes @ hot idle, not so much when I start it up cold .

The power feels pretty good but after 85 MPH the power band flattens out quickly and it takes a while to get up to 105 MPH, I'da run it longer to see how fast it'll go but there was traffic and I don't like to drive fast when there are others near me .

Between 60 ~ 75 it accelerates fairly briskly, remember this is a Diesel, not some big V8 gasser .
