Re: [diesel_mercedes] Another Sad Day

Met a sweet young thing a couple of years ago, who was totally floored at the information that Paul McCartney had been in a whole 'nother band before Wings..

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Glow plugs & Cold Wx. Starting

Sounds good Tony ;

Remember to lay a long towel down along the cylinder block below the glow plugs so when you drop a nut or washer , it'll not dissappear .

I use white towels and 1/4" drive tools fr this job .

Also , it's time to buy some Power Service Cetane Boost , remember :

White bottle : Winter

Silver bottle : Summer .

Add 3 Oz . to a full tank and feel the improvement .

I-5 is bumpy & cracked all to hell , same as always ~ I highly recommend driving Rt. 99 South , it's just as fast , smoother and more interesting too .

Will probably bang them in there, or hang on to em and do em in Mexico. May re do the valves thisaft if the weather is warm enough, barely above freezing, I 5 is starting to call me.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Gas pedal Sticking

This is serious and can get you killed .

Be aware that spraying 1st. with WD40 then lubricants , doesn't get the accumulated dirt and fossilized grease out....

You really do need to pop the balls apart and clean them by hand with a nice clean rag and maybe even a small toothbrush sized wire brush (.99 CENTS Store) to scrub away the rock hard stuff .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Bendix vs ATE rear calipers 82 240D

I'd not do it but then I have issues with vehicles that don't stop in a straight line .

Just call 'em up and say " one is wrong " and they'll send out another , use the two that match .

When you call therm , be sure to ask for a " UPS Call Tag " ~ this is the return authorization label you'll be needing , they'll know you're serious about returning the wrong part .

Rather than try to explain to a non Mechanic over the telephone why two different Mfrs. are not acceptable , I'd just say " they're different " .

Eyeballing it doesn't look like a difference, but everyone says make sure they're a pair of the same brand. Someone talk me down from doing this job on Friday if I shouldn't put them on like that.

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Gas pedal Linkage Bushing

It is on the firewall behind and just to the left of the engine , one rod comes up to it from the accellerator pedal and rotates a rod that goes forward to the engine .

This means you've not yet popped apaert , cleaned and lubed all the pivot balls yet....

If the center of the plastic bushing is loose atall , it's bad ~ it's allowed to rotate but _not_ move up & down . to lube it's white plastic ball (originally white , now usually brown) , use Aerosol Silicone spray with the snorkel .

Keep at it , work *gently* here please .

Q. : did you recently do a valve adjustment or otherwise touch the rods before this stiff throttle began ? .

-Nate

>
> Even after lubricating all the connections the pedal feel is linear only halfway through its travel and I really have to squash down hard that second-half where it only moves a fraction farther. I'm guessing it has to be the Busching but I'm not sure how to get to it.
