Re: [diesel_mercedes] Sylvia update - 1984 300SD - Spilling her Vulcan blood and DOT4 snot - and help w/ cruise control

You might try a 300D manual since the engine is the same, they might have retained the old system.  Don't you just love cruise control?  It can be set to take you into the woods at a predetermined speed.

Sylvia's been going through her own version of spring "cleaning" this month - first she blew out the right rear flexible brake hose - so I had all four replaced and the system bled. It's like she's got brand new brakes again and....then she blew out two or three small holes in the retrofitted center exhaust which needed some minor welding to silence - then she decided to start oozing coolant under her skirts in the mornings. Well, that turned out to be a failing seal on the water pump, which was replaced, followed by a cracked header on the radiator. Hopefully today I'll get her back and she'll stay dry....it's been one thing after another lately - and not sure when she's going to settle down and give me another 10K miles with nothing but oil and fuel filter changes - fingers crossed it's starting now.

Assuming she does manage to stay repair free for the rest of the month, I plan to reward her with a rebuilt speedo/odometer - and if I get really lucky, figure out how to troubleshoot and repair/replace the faulty cruise control (CC). I've been scouring my copy of the MB service manual for the 300SD and cannot find any sections that deal with diagnosing and servicing the CC.

Does anyone have any hints/suggestions? When I first go the car back on the road, it seemed to be working, albeit intermittently - it would hold 65MPH for many miles, then just disconnect/drop the throttle. Attempts to reset it would fail for a while, then eventually hold even @ the set speed for many more miles, then drop again.

Then some time ago I had the valves adjusted and after that, no CC at all (not sure why/what). Looking at it more closely last weekend, I see there's a unit mounted on the engine block which goes directly to the linkage - and coming from the unit is a cable that leads to a pin block on the left front wheel well inside the engine compartment. Have done minimal work there to remove, clean up and re-seat the pins and connectors to see if that was any help. It wasn't - and all fuses appear to be intact.

Thanks....
