Complete (with convertor) flush and fill with filter made no difference. There was a light swarf in the pan but NO metal dust. The swarf looked like it was from friction component wear. It goes into first and reverse just fine. But does not shift out of first. I can get up to about 25 mph and let off the pedal and it coasts but does not up shift. I believe it is staying in first and just coasting. I have no reason to believe catastrophic failure has occurred - meaning that the heavy parts are still in good condition. But while describing it to a friend It occurred to me that the problem may be the centrifugal pressure regulator that is used to indicate to the mechanism the vehicle speed. That would explain why it goes into gear but does not upshift. Anyone had any experience with those. IIRC, they can be accsesed by removing the rear housing which can be done on the vehicle.
Any thoughts?

Yes, and I have this chilling effect as if there is impending doom. Does any one know if a clutch pedal can be fitted to these wagons. I know the sedans can be so fitted. But I don't know about the wagons. A W123 is not always a W123. I have a line on a 240D with a manny tranny. Just wondering.

If it's a standard, your linkage fell apart. Crawl under d put it back together.
Automatic. You're screwed.
