This reminds me of one of my funniest stories.
I'm in NH, cold and snow. A coworker had a VW diesel, standard transmission. It was hard starting and he needed a tow to start it. He asked me to tow him on a chain to jump start it. It needed to be in 2nd or 3rd to get the engine turning without skidding the tires.
I had a dually chevy crewcab 4x4. I chained the VW. Ken mentioned he would flash the lights when it started, just keep pulling until he flashed the lights.
I started at one end of the 300 ft parking lot and drove to the other end at about 20mph. Looking back there were no lights. Rather than slamming on the breaks and having him hit me, I curved around at speed and went back down the lot. After 4+ round trips, I decided to slow down gradually and stop to talk to him.
When I made it to the VW, Ken was white faced and didn't say much. He said that it started, but he couldn't pull his hands from the wheel to flash the lights. Every time I cornered, he lost traction and swung out on the end of the chain sideways like a water skier on the outside of the turn. He was sideways most of the time, seeing snowbanks, fences, light poles and the Nashua River passing by closely, at great speed.
I still laugh every time I think of this.

All W123 and W126 Diesels with automatic trannies 1985 and earlier are equipped with a 2nd pump making it possible to start at 35MPH when shifted from neutral into drive or S. I've never had to use this feature, but it's there for emergency situations.Kevin in LaPorte, CO
