[diesel_mercedes] New Year's Eve Day Ride

No ;

the So. Cal. Norton Club .

I had some Kailua in my coffee when I got up there for anti - freeze .

Many years ago , a New Years Day ride up there and beyond was  a regular thing , after my Son got in his 20's he stopped riding in the cold so I tapered off and quit .

You're correct , most often the pavement is clear and dry even when it's bitterly cold up there .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Baby , It's _COLD_ Outside !

I'll tell ya how cold it is. And I dont mind sayin I do drink some beer. Yesterday I had some Wild Blue(8% blueberry beer) on the porch, brought it in and tried to pour it, it would not come out of the bottle, thats a little cold. That being said we like the cold for many reasons up here, some I cant say. Probably the most amazing day I ever saw was looking tru ice crystals at the low angled sun just coming up at -20 degrees. Winter is almost over. Max

So naturally I'm outside sitting on a milk crate in my shirt sleeves using liquid de greaser and water from the garden hose to clean the accumulated old grease and desert sand off the three good working door checks I found in Las  Vegas last week with Tom......

After they were all cleaned up and dried off (and my fingers an interesting shade of blue)  , I used white aerosol lithium grease to lube one up then I took the driver's side door on my grey market 1984 300TD apart and installed it , replaced the broken inside door release pull and discovered the source of the ' thunk ' sound the driver's side window recently began making ~ the 10 MM A.T.F. bolt that holds the electric window lift to the window proper , was very loose and about to fall out .

I snugged up all the various fasteners , most were loose and I discovered the D.P.O. had ignored this same issue until the lift failed and the door skin was cracked in two places and torn in another where a 10 MM A.T.F. bolt is supposed to hold the window lift .

Pic. # 1 shows my set up for cleaning before I began .

Pic. # @ shows the stress cracks in the inner door skin from the DPO foolishly ignoring the bad noises and trying to force the window closed . notice these cracks developed nowhere near any fasteners , they occurred from the entire inner door skin flexing !  .

Pic. # 2 shows the wrong hardware and funky homemade gusset used to over come the larger hole where a 6 MM stud was ripped right through ~ it's ugly but it was the _only_ fastener in the entire door that wasn't loose so I decided to leave it as is .

The door card was a little bit dirty and this is SWMBO's car so I left it off for the moment , I'll scrub it Hospital Clean before making up  new plastic dust/moisture shield (also gone missing , GRrrrr) and re assembling everything .

I also have to do the passenger side front door and look inside the rear passenger side door as it'd window is making a faint ' click ' now and then .

HAPPY NEW YEARS to all ! .

[diesel_mercedes] Monovalves , LKQ Sale & Fuzzy Math

Thanx Rob ! ;

Please let us know the W123 situation as there are none near me .

At the moment I'm driving SWMBO's Wagon , I have the driver's side door apart and will then do the others , not looking forward to shivering my way to work in the El Nino that's supposed to start Monday and last through March....

Sorry I jumped the gun on the year thing , maybe my being to fast is why SWMBO is cranky...... .

Nate,

One New Year's at a time.
Chinese New Year is on Feb 8th.

I need a few things, maybe I can head out to the local PAP for 40% off.
I think that there's a few 123s in OC. We'll see, as I have a bunch of things to do.

My earlier joy at regaining heat with the monovalve, has sunk a bit, as while it's hot around town, on the freeway the heat disappears. Still better than the little or no heat in either situation.

Welcome to The Year Of The Monkey !

Since I didn't get drunk nor shot last night , Tom and I headed off to LKQ Pick-A-Parts annual " FOUR DAY 40 % OFF SALE Dec. 31 , Jan. 1 , 2 & 3 " .

Me , I'm a High School dropout so I thought that made four days but what the hell do I know ? *:-B nerd .

Anyways , I was most pleased to find a recently impounded drug dealer's W126 500SEC with a freshly rebuilt Becker radio in it , more so because they sold it to me for a whopping $9.00 ~ SWEET ! .

They know me there so the Counter guy didn't even ask if I wanted the warranty (of COURSE not !) .

Tom was able to score two fully electronic radios for his 1979 Dodge D200 Pick Up Truck , also for $9.00 each , they even threw in a Dodge to DIN # 1 adapter because who the hell wants/needs radios for 37 year old Dodge trucks ?! .

Just in case he ever gets a wild hair , he can now correctly and easily install any modern radio and it'll look proper , no cutting etc.

He was also able to grab an inside hood locl , some undamaged plastic dashboard bits and bobs so all in all it was a very good day out .

That's it for now , not a single W123 to be seen in the yard and all the W126's were gassers =8-( .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Injector Service

Not sure what model Mercedes you're working with here but ;

Always follow the same , correct steps to ensure satisfactory end results :

Valve adjustment , hot oil and filter change then do a " Diesel Purge " followed by new fuel filters , then if it still smokes / runs poorly / misses , begin looking at the injectors as yes , they do both wear and get dirty .

Depending out your area you'll prolly be able to find a ' Bosch Repair Station ' wherein they'll test , overhaul or rebuild your injectors on an as needed basis .

ALWAYS replace / repair them in sets so every cylinder works in a balanced fashion .

The only variance to this rule is when you're competent to use , and have at hand , a Diesel Injector Pop Tester and ready availability of used / Junk Yard injectors .

The good folks here will walk you through this Laura .

In The San Gabriel Valley area of So. Cal, I know one or two shops if you'd rather just have it done .

Is it better to clean the fuel injectors or replace them? My Mercedes is 51 years old and almost everything under the hood looks untouched/original. If it it better to replace, where is the best place to get them? If cleaning them is best...can I do that myself? What kind of cleaning solution do I use?

Thank you so much!

Laura

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Injectors

There is no way of knowing if your injectors are good or bad unless they are taken out and a pressure test is done. Healthy injectors chatter and mist with a wide pattern. A "pee" stream will work but poorly. New tips usually do the job. The body's can be reused. Pacific injectors does this for 15 dollars an injector. He also cleans the old bodies and makes sure they in top condition. I had Monarch injector tips installed because I run veg oil. Lawrence Rhodes
