[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check 1984 300CD Automatic

486 miles , 27 MPG's , better than before , I think the gasoline I added helped clean out/up something as I've never gotten this high fuel economy before and I drove it hard most of this tank .

Throttle response is greatly improved , especially tip in  .

Startron used .

Buncha chunks of black crud in the clear plastic primary fuel screen , I blew it out and re installed it as it's only a month or so old .

Interestingly , the secondary , spin on filter had -NO- black crud , fine silt or anything in it , I guess this means the system is almost clean now .

I hate the damn smoke tho' .

[diesel_mercedes] GAH !

 .

After a tiresome day at work I went home to address the weepy IP and fuel filter head on my Coupe , I stopped by pep Boys and grabbed a couple LED tail light bulbs as one brake light went out , spent several hours fooling with the # 1 injector line and cleaning the crud out of the element in the IP ~ I don't have a decent size magnet to remove the lower ring part and in rattling it around and up and down with a dental pick , I discovered lots and lots of dirt in there I had to clean out .

The steel pipe was damaged at the IP end so I grabbed a spare one , cleaned it all up , re assembled and fitted new Mercedes O-Rings to the weepy bolt in the secondary filter , de greased the entire engine and undercarriage , cleaned _me_ up a little bit and made it to the filling station where I filled it up , the damn thing STILL WEEPS FUEL GAH ! .

It smokes on take off from a dead stop although the smoke tapers off a lot once it's spooled up and zipping along , I HATE EXHAUST SMOKE and want to now replace the entire IP in spite of it running well , very well indeed .

I'm beat  , going to bed in a moment .

I just had to rant a bit , I know folks here will stifle their laughter and pat my shoulder like they care  .

Can anyone say matching color duct tape?  Or for the purist, clear packaging tape.

Is the rubber any good?  The window and sunroof seals on my La Jolla lady are completely disintegrated.  At 50 mph, this car sounds like a Cessna gliding down with a missing window.  I wouldn't mind it so much if the Becker had more power to overcome the noise.

It's a good thing it doesn't rain much around here.  I can brush the snow off before it has a chance to melt, which would cause lakes in the front floorboards and in the trunk.

[diesel_mercedes] Wagon Rubber

So far so good Mark .

The rear side window rubbers were N.L.A. last time I checked , so far not a drop of water has ever leaked in .

Thanx ! .

Oddly , I've never bought a heat gun ~ I suppose I should but the job is done now anyway .

California car , NO RUST .

Bled all four calipers out with my Motion Pro pressure bleeder , it turns out the pressure leaking out of it was the cleap plastic hose connecting the tank to the resivoir cap was dying of old age and sun exposure , I looked in the original box and found a long bit of 3/8" clear plastic hose (I guess I'd bought it long ago as the provided hose is decidedly too short)  , carefully loosened up the pinch typ clamps , installed the new , longer hose and ever so gently re squeezed the clamps with a pair of dykes and I was off to the races ~ it easily held  pressure (a shade under 5 #) and the bleeding went normally , I discared all the new fluid I ran through it , I'm using DOT 4 brake fluid .

I discovered the wheels I'd washed three weeks ago , were not actually clean ~ rather , the de greaser had  sluiced off all the oil and left them covered in nearly 1/16" of ancient brake dust that began flying around as soon as I touched it....

Sigh .

Out came the non metallic brushes and an old oily rag , I cleaned much of the fluffy brake dust off dry then rinsed them down , sprayed with Simple Green abnd went to town scrubbing ~ I can now see most of the shiny original glossy black paint  although they're no where as clean as I'd like them to be .

I also discovered I have all five original date coded 15" (!) wheels but have FOUR different brands of original Mercedes 12 X 1.50 MM lug bolts plus -one- that had no maker's mark anywhere on it and appears to have a slighty different thread pitch so I maybe be ponying up for TWENTY (GA$P) new lug bolts from Tom at the Classic Center as some of the otherwise O.K. original bolts have mashed flats from some tire shop boob using the wrong size socket with an impact gun . it's always something , right ? .

After I was done (but of course !) I found the box full of missing hardware and 6MM bolts etc. so that's good .

I also found and collected into one box , all the various door checks as I need to service some more for the 240D and Coupe .

All this plus more before Noon , I'm tired  .

[diesel_mercedes] Cleaning Fuel System

Yes I did ;

Not pure Gasoline of course but a very heavy mix .

I've been changing filters and running Startron but I keep seeing tiny bits of black crud here and there in the clear intake screen and inside the injector connections , so on .

So I figured to shock the system and guess what ? .

It's WORKING ! I've been lead footing it from every dead start and I just ran out for an errand , I now have 470 miles on it , lots of sunlight so I popped the hood and Lo ! black chunks in the clear intake screen and better pickup , more power and LESS SMOKE ~ I can still smell the oil burning  but if it at least cleans the final bit of crud out of the fuel system I'll be ahead when I install my used injection pump .

Whew .

The rattling is louder @ idle but it starts easily and run fine , this morning on the way t work I topped 100 MPH a few times , I wanted the rack to go full open to flush out Lord alone knows what's in there .

Fingers crossed , I hope it doesn't run dry on fuel on one of the blind curves on the Pasadena freeway .

We'll see .

I plan to stop off and buy two new fuel filters on the way home to - night .

Yesterday I reached 430 miles and the low fuel lamp came on , I continued to my Brother's house Where he had 2 gallons of Gasoline needing discarding so I poured it into my nearly empty fuel tank hoping to shock kill any thing left in there , my clear plastic primary fuel screen has remained clean for several months but then I had the IP's elements out for timing I noticed too much really fine black bits in there so I figured what the heck .

Leaving his house I didn't notice any difference in engine running / power / smoothness but I did notice a lack of smoke as I pulled away from dead stops ~ I was hot footing it to try and run the IP's rack wide open to facilitate cleaning , I'd get a blast of gray (fuel) smoke that stopped as the turbo spooled up and the car really began to move out .

This morning the was a fog upon L.A. so I was very cautious driving until I passed mid - city , then it cleared up crystal  clear so I stamped the accelerator to the floor and the car leapt forward , flew past all the other traffic and reached 103 MPH before beginning to run out of steam .

At that point I was closing in on other traffic to I backed off , worked my way through the knot of cars and floored it again , no visible smoke in their headlights as I rapidly pulled away and reached 100 MPH again .

By the time I reached Work the low fuel lamp came on again , I think I'll run it dry , add the spare fuel I hope I have in the trunk then motor directly to a filling station and tank up .

At that point I'll check the intake fuel screen for debris and silt , see what I have .
