[diesel_mercedes] Dropping Fuel Economy '84 300CD Slushbox

 




 Yeah, me too Mark .


Sigh .

I ca, it's not terribly difficult, I made my self a timing drip tube and did it on this car before when I installed the 1985 300SD's injection pump from a nice car that was rear ended .

The 240D's fuel economy stinks too, it's only 24 ~ 25 MPG's after I bankrupted my self rebuilding the engine and tranny .

391 miles, 22.3 MPG .

BioBor J4 used, no trace of fungus in any filters, engine runs very well but this low fuel economy is not O.K. .

Time for new rear tires very soon .

Do that valve ADJUST .

I need to do one on the coupe plus a LOF and tranny service, I bought the gasket kits and sufficient ATF to drain and re fill the torque converter .

Then, I'll need to do serious cleaning of the interior, wash the stiff with sweat seat belts, try again to find a set of third row seat belts and get my buddy Rich to do a major up grade / overhaul of the AC system ~ new Sanden compressor, larger, cross flow condenser, new hoses and a new R134 rated expansion valve .

Plus, the rear hatch supports, I bought two new ones from The Classic Center .

Thanx Joe - I appreciate that .

You're right of course, I get the doldrums from time to time, the last month + has had gloomy weather and misty days that make it hard for me to work as I work outside .

The pain is truly 24/7, it's sort of manageable but it keeps me tired and run down feeling .

I  am still not happy with the wagon's brakes ~ it stops fine yes but I like the brake pedal to be rock hard and it never has been on this car, I've bled the brakes several times, replaced the master cylinder and front calipers, use a pressure bleeder pumped up to 10 PSI but I still don't like the feel of the pedal and some times the yellow brake dash light is on in the morning, goes out in a block of so of driving even if I don't use the brakes .

[diesel_mercedes] Whew, I'm Beat

 


I finally got a roundtuit and jacked up my 1984 300CD Diesel Sports Coupe, yanked all four wheels and replaced the worn out, thin original front brake rotors (less than 8MM thick after 424,000 miles) , repacked the bearings inner and outer, cleaned off the incredible overage of crease everywhere, washed all four wheels, adjusted the park brake then drained, re filled and bled all four brake calipers using ATE DOT4 fluid .

I was lucky and found some brandy new front brake rotors on an otherwise completely gutted 240D in a junkyard .

I used Textar brand brake pads .

The rear pads looked fine oddly enough .

Both rear tires are near the wear bars so I'll be replacing them soon .

One was dated 2009 ! .

To - day I washed the entire car and waxed the trunk lid before the pain made me quit .

I hope to get the whole car hand waxed before June 3rd. when I plan to drive it on the TT Lite road rally....
