[diesel_mercedes] Klima II Fuse Blowing

On my '84/'85 European Spec. 300TD the HVAC and horns share the same fuse and since I bought the car it blew regularly , replacing the horns with rebuilt earlier , better sounding horns didn't help and I couldn't find any bare/damaged/shorted wires , I kept replacing the fuses and in time they stopped blowing but last week when I ran the heater on high in the cool morning , I noticed a slight vibration and heard the blower's bearing howling so now I feel confident that was the problem ~ as any electrical motor gets drag from lack of lubrication or simply wears out , it draws ever more current as it struggles to achieve proper speed , this can blow the fuses , in this case it's an 8 Ampere fuse .

My thought is : the fan bearing went dry after 30 years and began to drag , as I run it on low anytime I'm driving , the bushing simply wore out and got loose , allowing it to vibrate and have less drag even though it's worn out and  jun now .

I have experianced this on other hig mileage vehicles before .

As soon as I can budget it I'll buy a Uro brand $100  new fan and install it , see if it ever blows the fuse again .

[diesel_mercedes] Rear Brake Pads 300CD

When I was having my two new rear tires mounted last week I noticed the outer of the rear pads was about 75 % gone so I bought a set of new pads from Autozone for $27 , they came with shims pre attached , this is a bonus as the shims reduce or eliminate the squealing noises disc brakes often make .

The edges of the pads were also chanmfered to promote rapid bedding in regardless of rotor surface ~ I almost never have rotors surface ground as that makes then thinner and more prone to fading , warping or simply poor performance .

I used my trusty long 1/8" flat nose punch and 32 Oz. ballpien hammer plus a pair of needle nosed pliers to remove the hair pins then the pad retaining pins , scrubbed out the accumulated brake dust with a toothbrush sized wire brush and tapped in the new pads , about 9 minutes per side , it took me longer to wash the accumulated brake dust off the wheels inside and out using wheel cleaner in a trigger sprayed from The Dollar Store and a 4" paint brush , I think a 1" brush would  work better due to the holes and ribs in the " Bundt " typ alloy wheels but at least they're clean for a week or two......

Autozone says all but one (the cheapest) of their various grades of disc brake pads are ceramic now , this should mean longer life of the rotors (@ 380,000 + miles they're original and in VGC , no grooves/warping) and hopefully better performance , not that I've ever faulted the Mercedes brakes no matter how fast or furious I drive the car .
