I did read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and his other, Lila: An Inquiry into Morals, which centered on sailing.

Another more recent book on Philosophy and motorcycle repair is, Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work

I did something similar on my 300D, to find the plug, little tugs of the ratchet, and watch for the plug. I think a flashlight or shop lamp was in there somewhere.

When I had  my '87 300TD on ramps, I was able to lie crossways under the car just behind the ramps with my right hand swinging the ratchet and my left hand in the inspection hole feeling for the torque converter plug to come around. This should be easier to do with a 240D since it is only a four cylinder.

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300CD Slushbox

 

No additives used .

488 miles, 25.6 MPG .

I repaired my injector pop tester to - day and tested the rebuilt injectors I installed a few months ago, one was bad ~ it drooled horribly, streaming a tiny solid stream of fuel @110 BAR, once it reached 132 BAR it popped and had a good spray pattern but the drooling I think is what caused the smoke and loping idle .

I also tried the IP timing tool I made a few years ago, it works fine and my car's IP is timed @ 26 degrees BTDC .

I then tested most of the remaining unused rebuilt injectors and 7 of them drool the same way, a few pop before 120 BAR making them defective .

I need to go collect the set he made me for my 240D and see if they're any good before I contact the rebuilder .

I hope he stands behind his product .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '84 300TD Automatic

 


No AC (it's still dead), no fuel additives used .

339 miles, 22.6 MPG ~ this wagon has never gotten stellar fuel economy but it's been sliding bit by bit even though no visible smoke and no diesel smoot on the tailgate...

A very soft, irregular miss @ idle tells me I need to fix my injector pop tester and see how they're doing .

If you look at it there's a model # stamped into it near the pan flange .   Might be a tag, I forget .


I *think* it will read 722.XXX and that # will determine it's value .

Post the nearest town or interstate exit so folks nearby will know to answer your call .
