Jeez Louise! I sent the head out over 2 months ago and finally, yes finally after waiting for parts (prechamber shims, intake and exhaust guides, etc., the machine shop finally returned to me a "perfect" head. Better be! I rebuilt the turbo myself but had the shop balance the turbo (at TN Nate's suggestion) so that's done. Got the rebuild kit for the vacuum pump from Peachparts; had the starter rebuilt while that whole side was open, putting a new water pump on, etc. Sent the radiator out for a once-over. Got all the sundry parts (yeah right) so reassembly to commence this coming Friday/Saturday. Until I see that missed a part (like rubber exhaust hangers, damn!).

Never done this in my life I must say. Any last words for a rookie about to rebuild the entire upper half of a OM617 with nothing but a FSM and a dream?

Thinking about prep before head is remounted, what should I be doing to get the block ready? Want to desparately flush the cooling system but sort of can't now with the head off, lest I get crap where I don't want it. Fire away ladies and germs.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 84 300D

The window switch is most likely gummed up.  They can be cleaned and reinstalled, if you're careful.  The contacts can be cleaned by "burnishing" (rubbing with a pencil eraser).

Your cruise control sounds like it's operating just like the one in my former car, a '77 300D.  I removed the control box from behind the passenger side kick panel, opened the cover, then resoldered all the connections.  After re-installation, it worked great!

There is no light in the dash to indicate whether the cruise control is on.

Wow,

I am developing a love hate relationship with our car. We named it Double G (Golden Goose) because we have not had to stop at a gas station for 4 months (over 7K miles). She purrs like a kitten on WVO, Biogreasel and 100% biodiesel. Can not hardly tell the difference.

The bad, someone rearended the car and was estimated as 4K in repair and the insurance company wants to give us $1600 dollars and total it. We paid 2300 and did 500 in repairs ect. We also have 3 issues I hope you guys can help with.

1. drivers window will not go up or down- just started last night
2. Cruise control will accelerate only if hold the lever up but will not do anything else. ( is there a light that tells if it is on)
3. A/C not blowing cold.

do not really know where to start with these issues. Drivers window and cruise are probably the priority. A/C, my son may be able to dx when he gets into his A/C class in college.

thanks, NICK

It seems like, the bigger issue is the smashed in rear.

The switch is most likely dirty. It can be cleaned out. I think it was
Tom who wrote instructions a few years back. Search the messages.

It's more surprising that the cruise works at all, as they're known for
going out. Mine worked like yours when I bought it, then later, not at
all. Some people have re-soldered the connections in the box, and others
have sent it out for repair. Not cheap.

Might just need some r134 if it's been changed over from r12.
Compressors known for going out at any time...

Unfortunately in the Northeast we can't often get away with resting both feet firmlyon the floor.  It worked with my Fiat 600 not so well with my 560 SEL.
