Re: [diesel_mercedes] Vintage GMC

302 with a  5-spd trans with a electric 2 spd rear end shift. Ran pretty dang good. Really only drove it twice, once to my land and once when I sold it. I also used a 8 volt in my old 6V VW. Max

? Was it a 223 or 302 i6 Max ? .

I was always taught that 8 volt batteries were a bad cheat but in the end they actually worked well and as long as the original generator was charging properly you didn't need to tweak it was the surge charge was 7 VDC anyways, plenty to make that 4 cell 8 volt monster  a cold starting powerhouse and not shorten bulb life at all .

My 40 foot 1954 GMC bus was 6volt.. But I had to put in a 8volt battery and rig the voltage regulator. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driving every day in Wisconsin

Well, it is a sad story, but here it is: Original engine died when I tried to beat a yellow light not knowing there was a large dip in the road so I was airborne and when I landed I had two holes in the oil pan. The oil quickly leaked out and I fried the engine before I understood what was happening. The second engine came from a rust bucket in MN. It worked well for 8-10 years but then started overheating. Took it to Mike the Mechanic who thought he fixed the overheating issue. I picked it up to drive it from California to Washington, but going over the mountains (4500') the head gasket blew coming in to Bakersfield.

Probably neither issue was the OM617's fault, rather driver and mechanic error.
