Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240D Top Speed ?

My 1979 240D topped out at about 90 mph as well on a flat road.
I'm sure it was the governor, as the motor still seemed to have more power.

10.4.16
So
;
In
trying to fully clean the cooling system I have taken to
running this car (1982 240D automatic Sedan, 358,000 +
miles, bad valve in # 1 cylinder) with the throttle pinned
and the heater turned to max hot (fan off) on the freeway
when I can find it open .
After
a couple miles the temperature begins to creep up and almost
reaches 100* C ~ at this point whatever silt or crud is in
the wee corners of the water jacket begins to break loose

and mix with the distilled water I'm running .
After
a 15 minute run yesterday the water remained clear so I
*thought* I was all done and ready to install pre mixed
coolant but after tearing up the Harbor freeway @ full tilt
boogie this morning I popped the radiator cap to find foamy
stuff, meaning there's still a little bit of cleaner or
something in there ~

This
afternoon I drained it (block and radiator) and refilled it
with distilled water and hit the I-1210 freeway , pinned the
throttle and waited .

Much
to my surprise it easily pinned the speedometer (@ 82 per
GPS) and continued to accelerate ~ this was on a slight down
hill grade and eventually I guess it hit the governor in the
injection pump as it flat wouldn't go faster than 89 MPH
.
That's
plenty fast for a 50 HP 4 cylinder naturally aspirated
Diesel pushing a 4,700 pound car through a slushbox tranny
.
I
also eyballed the toe in , I'd noticed the car "
hunting " a little bit and it was toed out .
Now
it drives O.K. but the steering wheel is slightly off set to
the right so I must needs re adjust the tire rods to center
it .
