Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Exhaust Hanger Doughnuts -

A coat hanger is a fairly narrow bit of wire.  With the constant vibration of the running vehicle, it is probably going to saw through the fuel hose in relatively short order.

If I recall, the chain filled exhaust hangers built for the 107 coupes are not expensive and fit our cars.  I believe that the metal in them is BIGGER than coat hanger wire, and the 'rubber' molded onto them is less subject to sawing motion during vibration.

I make my own using 1/4" fuel hose and coat hanger wire. Cut a length of hose that will make the size loop you want. Run the coat hanger wire through it twice, pull it tight, fold the wire ends over each other and cut them to leave a couple inches extra. Shove those ends into the inside of the hose. Strong and won't rattle. I have also simply used bare coat hanger wire and that has never rattled, just looped it around maybe four times. I think the hose might make it last a bit longer. The problem I have had with ready-made doughnuts are that sometimes they don't fit, depending on any muffler work that has been done. Using homemade ones, you can custom-adjust the way the muffler hangs.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1974 MB 240D injector replacement

I've done a couple injector replacements (both 1978 300D's), and was able to get the heat shields out using my fingertip or fingernail.  Find the finger that fits tightly enough, push it into the hole and it should come out with your finger when you lift it out.  If you can get it to slide under your fingernail, you can flip it onto its edge and pull it out that way.  I didn't have any luck with pliers, magnets or any other tools.

Good luck!

I have used coat hangers for temporary work, but this sounds better. I also read here a while ago that somebody had actually strung a wire underneath the muffler from one end of the car to the other, to act as a backup in case the donut failed unexpectedly.

Jacks and prybars usually will get the OEM styles to fit.  Hose clamps make a good emergency repair.

[diesel_mercedes] 1974 MB 240D injector replacement

I have removed the injectors and have tried to remove the seating washers. Does anyone have a suggestion? I have tried a hook, a magnet, and needle nose pliers.
