Re: [diesel_mercedes] And then there's the one on Rock....Brian trans filter

Trish,

Any of the filter, gasket or filter/gasket kits for the 722.0/1/2 transmission is what you're looking for.  This is the transmission with the 4-bolt pan.  Because '81 was a crossover year, with some cars (W126) getting the newer, 722.3 transmission (with 6-bolt pan), and many (but maybe not ALL) of the W123's still using the earlier transmission, I would look for the filter/gasket kit for a pre-'80 car.  This is what you need from Autohausaz:

http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=kk14s155gr0heo2nlr4k5045&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1193981@300SD&year=1979&cid=33@Transmission/Transaxle%20System&gid=8600@Transmission%20Filter%20Kit

The Napa part number is ATP18549.

I couldn't look it up on 'Zone's website (which is near worthless, at least, at the moment), but if you go to one of the stores, they should be able to pull it up on Z-Net.  It's probably a VDP (Vender Direct Part), which means pre-paid special order, and usually comes in next day if ordered in the morning.

I did a search and couldn't match those parts numbers up with any of the parts places I'm aware of...so I don't know which one would be the right one.

I figure something out.

Thanks for the offer though. :)

If you can't make sense out of these part numbers, order from a parts house where you have the ability to return the product. The #1 filter is definitely different than the #2 filter, and I am not sure where I picked them up - but they are both new in unopened plastic packages.

Just to add to my confusion...here's something different at Rock. I see some o'rings in this kit.  Are those the ones Nate suggested I change?

I checked with Peach too. They only offer the filter, not a kit.  Auto Zone wouldn't drill down to show me specifics for my car, the ones they showed me were for a Ford.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : When cars were CARS

An endless parade of boring, government approved transportation appliances, designed to appeal to people who who don't like cars...  All made of ticky-tacky, and all look just the same..

No kidding!  We were coming back from N Dallas this morning & looking at cars saying the same thing.  They all look the same these days..I have to look for the emblem on the trunk and even then sometimes I don't know what it is!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re : So why are these different?

Crap.  I was just over there.  I'll have to see if I can talk Kevin into climbing under the car to take a pic for me.  He's tearing off 40+ yr old siding and putting up new stuff...he's not much in the mood to crawl under a car after  a day of that.  But for a quick pic, he might.

Was that a freaking-benz?  No, it's my fault.

I know, I know...I jumped into this much like jumping off of a cliff without looking first.  *Sigh*  (I did that once with a career move...oops.)

Don't think that out of frustration I haven't considered selling the car the way it sits and use the money for another one that's already put together. Not only am I NOT a quitter, but I KNOW that would be a huge mistake and I KNOW I'm gonna love this car once it's back on the road.

We're really not that far from being road ready. This weekend we need to: Find that bushing that's missing on the transmission. Do a major PS flush & put in the other fluids just to get it started. I'll order that darned filter I didn't know about and put it on when it gets here. Kevin's still got to figure out how/where to cut & weld that CPR & put the exhaust on.  I "think" that's all for basic operation.  Then of course there is the endless list of items...door locks, switch the passenger seat bottom for the drivers, wash the goats milk out of my back floor mat, see if the a/c works, I'll need it soon enough oh and find "new" speakers for the back...the former owner blew them out.

BECAUSE ;

You decided to jump the gun a little bit and hand build your Dream Mercedes Diesel from " Bitsa This & Bitsa That " ~ IIRC , there's early and late trannies , the pans or noticably different , just match up the gasket in the filter kit with what you see under your Franken Benz & you should be good to go .

[diesel_mercedes] mileage check

doing my normal commute, and 3 days 62 miles each way, 372 miles, 12.812 gallons equals 29.04 mpg.

I usually get 26-27 mpg. I don't know what was different, but I will accept it. And I hope it continues.

84 300sd, approx 275,000 miles (odometer stopped working about 6 months ago)

This weekend, oil change, air cleaner bracket replacement, maybe transmission fluid chnage, maybe aux fan switch replacement, and need to see if liquid below overflow tank is a cracked tank or a hose leak.

It's not a diesel Mercedes, but maybe this picture will help steer us back in the right direction.
