Re: [diesel_mercedes] Major breakdown

I used to have a '65 Mustang I was fixing up that I took the door panel off, had a 2x4 in there and when I wanted the window up I wedged the board in, when I wanted it down, I moved the board.  It worked fine.  Then I blew the motor and sold the car for more than I paid for it! :)

Max, Don't give up the faith.. You can pull the window and wedge it for a temporary fix. Once the weather warms up, the window can probably be repaired with a few parts from PAP. That is manual window, isn't it. You may can just prop it for a temporary fix. And the real fix should not be hard (a pain in the neck but not too hard).. Good luck.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Major breakdown

I finally had a major breakdown(first one ever) this morning on my 4-spd 240. I had to go to town and my car let me down, let me dowwwn really bad. It was freaking cold and I had to abort my trip to town because the passenger window broke down and would not roll up.Damn, the car was running and everything, I was driving down the drive way, the passenger window was down about 2", I tried to roll it up the rest of the way and it fell down ,all the way down. No way I could drive to town with a stiff wind blowing right off the glacier( I know Tony Knows about this), so I guess I will park the junker in the back 40 with all the other junkers. Crap, I had to drive the Subaru, what a drag. Could ooof been the last time I had to drive the Mercedes. O my, I'm bad, really bad. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Is anyone online right now???

Hey Tom

Thank you for the moral support.  I really needed that today.  Been up since 4am.  Really bummed.

I KNOW it's the main seal.  The car has been on a lift a couple of times while getting the exhaust done.

It's not nearly as bad as it used to be.  Some drives it leaks worse than others...same road, same speed limit, same hills???

There's nothing I can do about it now except baby it till I can replace it and part this one out.  It's been a PITA almost from the beginning.  If you recall I only had it two weeks and drove it 3 times before problems started.  The motor in it now only has 120K on it.  At least I can sell the old motor...as-is!  I'm going to check prices and see what I can get out of it.  I saw a billboard for a place near us that pays "top dollar" for cast aluminum, they had motors on the list of what they'll buy.  That might be the way to get the most out of it.

Kevin is DONE working on big stuff.  It wore him out.  He's super busy at work now, we wouldn't even be able to put it back in the "shop" at work if we wanted to.  It's tied up.  Everyone is going full bore getting ready for summer camp that starts June 4. It'll be ten weeks before anyone comes up for air.

Heck, Kevin's a veteran and has to work on Memorial Day...so for everyone that's NOT been in the military and will be sucking down beer, hot dogs, burgers and enjoying having a 3 or even 4 day weekend, you can thank Kevin, my sister, her husband, my father, great grandfather.  I wimped out after a year or two (it was a loooong time ago, it may have been a year and FELT like 2!) in ROTC.  I knew it wasn't for me.

This too shall pass....

Time for some oatmeal...that always makes me feel better. :)

Have a great day everyone...it's gonna be a HOT one here, near 90 and windy, gusts to 30.

Oh and sigh, on the way home last night there was the most beautiful puppy (Brian saw his pic on fb and said he was ugly, it wasn't his fault the picture was blurry) standing in the middle of the road at the stop sign as if he was saying to me STOP.  I had no choice.  And yes, I pulled over. And yes he came to me. He immediately started licking my hands and knees.  And yes I put him in the back seat of my MB, then rolled up his window and was hoping he wasn't going to try the escape hatch roof!  He sat there as nice as can be just looking out the window in wonder. He's now in one of our dog pens. His name is Garrett, since I found him in Garrett,TX.  I did check with the liquor store he was in front of.  Kinda po'd me, they said he'd been hanging around for a "few days" and no one claimed him.  I had to wonder if the two fat guys working there were nice enough to give him something to eat over the "few days".  He didn't look like it.  He IS up for adoption!  I'll take him to the vet when they open to see if he's been "chipped". He has a collar, but no tags. WHY do people do that?  Dump a perfectly nice dog?  In Ft Worth they just adopted out ALL of the dogs from the shelter! Over 300!  That's so cool.

Max,

Get a grip.  My 300SD started slinging oil, about a quart a mile.  It turned out to be a cut hose to the oil cooler.  I patched it temporarily with a bit of gasket rubber and a hose clamp.  Ran it a few thousand miles that way before the new hoses got put in.

There are dozens of places that these engines can leak oil.  Nothing Trish says indicates a shot engine.

Maybe it is shot, but we don't have evidence of that yet.  Don't rain on her parade prematurely.

Gezzz, keep dumping oil in the engine?Lets see, how much is oil now? $3 a quart? For how long ? The engine is shot. Take it apart to fix the leaks? Sure, cost more than it's worth to fix it unless you are willing to do all the work and you have the shop to do it in, and all the time and the patience. Should buy a Honda or a Hyunda, much better idea. Some times the truth hurts.Max
