This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.

Well..
I think (hope) it's done..
Picked it up tonight-- dropped it at a buddy's who's currently an "underemployed" autoworker.. They're re-tooling his plant or the replacement for the Jeep Liberty... He's got "time on his hands.."
For the record, thanks to Tom @Mercedes Classic.. Didn't realize our group got a discount. Dear God with what I spent it made a difference.
I think, this is the "list" of what I bought/had done.
Both front/rear flex discs on the driveshaft.. Likely still OEM..
Rear shock/spring replacement with SDL springs.
Both real wheel bearings replaced.. Mine was trashed, and acutally needed housing replacement.
Parking brake pad replacement..
Control arm bushing replacement..
and Both halfshafts were rebooted with "mercedessource" parts/instructions.
It seems like more was done.. The car obviously "sits" better now.
...he "charged" me $450 in labor..
I handed him $600, and know I still realistically owe him more. He's that good of friend..
..and NO, you CAN'T have his phone number!

[Attachment(s) from Greg Arrambide included below]I found my 1987 300SDL shifting hard today I have not driven it in almost 2 months and opened the hood and realized there was a vacuum line disconnected but in fact had a little plastic thing broken. I am adding the picture as an attachment to this email. hopefully someone can help me. Ive check mercedes source but could not find it. I was by the radiator hose and the diesel filter. It had one vacuum line one one end and the other but one end is broken. Any help would be great.Greg Arrambide

2-3 years ago, I lost my biggest supplier, not the cleanest oil, but I was getting about 70-80% yeild on the stuff I picked up. They told me there where no charges and where getting $0.90 a gallon. At the time, I had enough to continue to get me to work and back 5 days a week, about 380 miles a week.
I was also getting oil from cafe where I work, about 8 gallons every othere week, really bad, 40-60% yeild (about 4 good gallons). Twords the end, they extended their changes to maybe once a month, so was closer to the 40%, they signed a contract about a year ago for only $0.40 a gallon, no other fees (they should have done some research cause they could have gotten much more). $0.40 was not bad but here is the thing, this oil was so bad even from the start, the guy that heats his house with veggie that works here was getting it before me and nolonger wanted it, told me I did not want it either, but it was free, so I took it.
I thought about the comercial guys expenses, but I have some of them also, I figure the best places to get it for free are out of the way places, like the small islands off the cost where they would have to pay for a ferry to get the truck there, but I would also have that expense seeing I dont live there, but if I lived there....or up north in the mountians of NH, but again, I run into the same situation, If I have to burn 4 gallons to pick up 4, it does not do me any good.
I would think may others are running into the same situation, unless they own or are friends with a couple restrant owners.

The craigs list supply has gone by-by. My area craigs list only had ads for people wanting to by oil now, so any one with oil that does a quick search, will see that they can sell it for $1-2 a gallon, some times more.
I only put 5 gallons of diesel in the tank at a time in the summer and go 500-800 miles before the next 5 gallons, in the winter, I go with 6 gallons of diesel and refill 4-600 miles. I also cut the veggie with 10-15% kero when day time temps are below 40 highs.
This winter with the lack of veggie, I will only drive on the warmer days and hope to keep it above 100 miles per gal of diesel.
If the oil is free, I see a similar savings on fuel, if I have buy the veggie, the savings are gone with you concider the difference between gas and diesel, the insurance and upkeep on the 2nd car.
My gas guzzeler gets 30-33 mpg on gasoline, and there is a $0.50 a gallon difference in price here. I had a spread sheet the calculated everything out at one time, I need to dig it up and see where my break even point is.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will hit the KoC and VFW posts to see what they have.

Steve,
Do you know what they are paying in NH? I lost one source and would like to make sure I don't loose the next. I have watched the WVO collection for years. It doesn't seem to be a profitable business for them. By the time they add the costs of trucks, insurance, workers, etc. they are really in the hole.
Do the commercial companies charge the restaurants for tank rentals, pickup fees, etc?

The other has been slower business and longer change intervals on the restrants part to save some money on oil.
Thanks,
Steve

Looks like a 000-078-04-56 to me. I had one of these cars and loved it. Never should have sold it. I replaced not only this part, but the wole vacuum setup under the hood. What a difference.

It looks like one of the 1-way check valves. If I remember correctly,
the color tells you which one you need. You could just super glue it
back together, for the time being.
