Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: How long does automatic trans last?

Revving it? I do that to warm it up.  Guess I should stop that practice.

In general ;

About 250,000 miles .

*IF* however , you do foolish things like drive it with burnt up old fluid in it that smells like Navy Coffee , or sip it into drive whilst the car is still rolling backwards (no matter how slowly) , expect much shortened Slushbox life .

This is why so many American Drivers complain of trannies dying before 100,000 miles ~ they're simply not designed to take this sort of rough service .

Revving it above idle whilst waiting for it to take up , slamming shifts up or down , these are all things American Drivers do on a regular basis , I see it daily .

My Mercedes are all older ' beaters ' I got mused with lots of miles , I never , EVER abuse the trannies and have gotten well over 350,000 miles before needing rebuilding .

My '82 240D's tranny has been on it's last legs since I bought it over a decade ago but SWMBO doesn't want to $pend any $ on it so I keep a sharp eye on it and replace the fluid &filter annually . when if goes , she'll have to get it fixed .

I am thinking about getting rid of my 77 280SE and going back to diesel!  But I was wondering how long the automatic trans generally might last on these cars:

78 240D (193,000 miles)
79 300D (206,000 miles)

Anyone had experience with these cars and their trans?

Thanks.  Mike

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Digest Number 6085

My tranny went out a bit earlier 180k, so I replaced it with good used one which works yet needs a rebuild. I have a different tranny used only on 85 CA cars, now with 205k.

For protecting hoses, zip strip pieces of cut hose on to the hose you want protected. Knee pads....

As soon as I took out the old high pressure line I got a little surprise.  The new line had the right connectors but the wrong length.  So I used it anyway and rerouted the line not around the hydraulic canister/fluid holder .  I used some of the old holders.  However all the rubber protectors are gone or shredded.  Can a tight hold on metal using zip ties reduce the abrasion of high or low pressure hoses?  No squirting hose so check valve working.  The banjo bolt is 17mm with two washers and the rear size is 12mm. Hose has 3/4"/19mm end nut.  30 minute job for sure....except for the dirt.  Lawrence Rhodes
