Re: [diesel_mercedes] Rear Wheel Bearing Noise

The other wheel won't try to spin unless you have a limited slip (aka "posi", "positraction") differential.  A '67 will not have limited slip.

How would that work. because it's RWD wouldn't the other rear wheel have to spin as well?

Easy to check :

Jack up _one_ rear wheel at a time , chock the other three wheels , start the engine and put it into gear , run it up to the same indicated speed you heard the noise at , if no noise , stop and jack up the other side rear wheel , this way only one wheel bearing is spinning during the test allowing pin pointing of the noise .

FWIW , most of the time it'll be the right rear (drive side) wheel that's kaput .

Rear wheel bearings don't usually need to be replaced. Are they making noise or what?

I have a 67 200d. This has drum brakes on the rear. I have already changed the bearings on the front which is disk brakes, so what should I expect to be different, or does anyone have experience changing bearings with drum brakes. Thanks.

Dexter ;

This is where the E.P.C. comes in very handy ~ it'll have good exploded diagrams of how it's supposed to go back to - gether , always a handy thing to have .

Remember to only take one side apart at a time in case you get called away for a time and forget how every thing goes , you'll have the other side as a guide .

[diesel_mercedes] Sway Bar Bushings # 2 [5 Attachments]

[Attachment(s) from vwnate1@yahoo.com [diesel_mercedes] included below]

First Pic. shows the plastic cover removed and crumbled , the small square hole to the rear is where the latch part snaps in , you reach this from underneath and *gently* push it up 1/4" max. to release it .

The bolts in the leading ends of the sway bar are 17MM ATF and ire *very* tight ~ use a ring spanner or shallow six point socket on a flex handle , be ready to sweat a  lot on this job , I certainly did .

Mercedes says to remove the brake booster but that's a whole lot of work , I just ever so carefully unplugged a few wires and lifted them out of the way , the relay panel easily unscrews with one 8MM ATF screw then it too can be lifted out of the way ~ you're going to be reaching your hand in between the fender and brake booster so anything done to ease this is wise .

Pic. # 2 shows the tool I used to reach the 13MM ATF nut on the top of the left sway bar bushing clamp ~ it's _behind_ the brake booster and cannot be reached by a hand wrench .

Pic. # 3 shows this tool in use .

Pic. # 4 shows removing the lower left bracket nut , same tool but used above .

Pics. # 5 and 6 show the easy access to the passenger side sway bar clamp's nuts .

That's it for now , you'll have to remove both front wheels so be sure and safely block the car up as it's HEAVY and will KILL YOU if it falls .

More soon as I get back to it , I need to work on Tom's hearse fro All Hallow's Eve this Saturday .

This should prolly be added to the files section but I'm not sure how to do that .

[Attachment(s) from vwnate1@yahoo.com [diesel_mercedes] included below]

O.K. , here we go :

Pic. # 1 left side white plastic cover where the bar passes from underneath to the engine compartment .

Pic. # 2 shows the aperture uncovered , this cover is NO LONGER AVAILABLE and DELICATE so take the time to find the release clip underneath and *gently* push it up a bit until it's loose then draw it back wards to remove it .

Pic. # 3 is the cover off .

Pic. # 4 is the right side underneath the battery tray , you must remove it and clean out all the collected debris and leaves etc. ~ I try hard to keep my car clean where it counts but the corner drain here (ABOUT 9:00 hidden under the wiring harness) was clogged and the plastic drain tube underneath took some digging to clean out , , then I swept out the loose / dry crud then I used simple green and a thin brush to loosen and degrease everything , this is _REALLY_ important to keep clean else your car will rust out , there's another drain on the driver's side , easy to not notice if you don't know to look .

[diesel_mercedes] Bushings

Max ;

I just checked the box for contents and put it in the car , I'll try to get you the prices soon .

For the labor involved , I'd highly suggest replacing all six sway bar bushings at the same time .

I am really happy with the job he did on Martha - her front end is as tight as when she came off the line.

Brian ;

It's not as difficult as I'd expected , I am taking pictures , please stand by .

My computers died (both) so I'm only OnLine @ work right now .

It's all apart and I have the new bushings thanx to Tom Hansen Knight In Shining Armour at The Classic Center .,

Original Mercedes parts too ~ even better than Lamforder (! SP !) .

This _is_ a DIY-able job @ home with basic tools but is _NOT_ suggested for bent and broken Old Men (oops) .
Trolly jack and safety stands area a MUST HAVE here .

BIG pry bars too .
