Well stated Lawrence. I have had no car payments for 15 -20 years, and I put $1,000 per year into each car for tires, repairs, etc. And, people look at my cars and want to buy them. But, then, I like to turn wrenches, get cheap parts at PAP's, and get my hands dirty every now and then.

Now all the negative being said the first thing to be said is the car rusted? What is the current condition? Is there a reasonably good mechanic in the area? Is he honest? I have found that the parts for old Mercedes are plentiful and cheap. Once a fix is done is lasts a long time. Any other car will be as expensive or more expensive and the repairs don't last as long. However there are some DOA situations like power steering, injector pump, tranny and engine but I"ve seen people pay and think nothing of it saying it was cheaper than buying a new car. So pick your poison. 20k for a decent new car or a fixer upper whose payment is repair. You can't have it both ways. Given 5 to 10 years any car is a money pit. Some of the best to keep going is an old Honda Civic. My favorite are the 92 to 95. The VX and CX models get 50mpg. Super simple and reliable. However I'd then have to pay for fuel. So my solution has been the Mercedes w123. You get what you pay for but not always. In ten years of running old mercedes I've replaced a transmission, a couple of seized locks suspension problems, tires, antennas, mirrors, 9k in buying the cars another 4k in repairs and such. 5k coming in for accidents. I actually bought a TD with the money I got from a fairly clean 240 that got rear ended. Bought it back cheap and drove it two more years. So all in all if you have some money and smarts the Mercedes can be good. Lawrence Rhodes.....
