Nate, we keep thinking about putting a hitch on our 300D tow a small rv trailer or a small flat deck trailer for getting supplies.

If you can buy a "Bosch rebuilt" there is usually a lifetime warrenty
attached. I have gotten several "free" replacements with these (on
several different cars) not the same one every time.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 240 blowing alternators
Rob,
Thanks for the link. The price is quite good.
Usually, I need an alternator rather quickly when one dies. I have bought from PEP Boys, VIP auto, Advanced Auto, etc.
The one that just died was from Robbins Auto Parts, who is a Fisher auto parts dealer. The sticker on the rebuild is "USA industries". I usually am worried about companies that have to name themselves "USA". They are usually not really a quality product, but instead try to make people believe that they are quality. Sort of like USA Japan, when they wanted to stamp their products as "Made in USA".
Looking on the web, I found USA Industries. They have a flashy website, but very poor quality. It takes them 3 tries to get their own company name correct!

:
http://www.usaind.com/
We are a leading remanufacturer serving the automotive aftermarket
USA Inustries is responsive, flexible, and has the organized integrity to meet all of our commitments and to support and promote our customers success. Outstanding service, product reliability and assurance of supply are our pledge.
We deliver the best total cost solution
USA Insdustries best total cost solution is achieved through; competitive pricing, high line fill rates, efficient order processing and fast product shipments, and built-in quality and reliability, that only an industry leader can provide.
Re-Manufacturing, the Original Green Industry
By reclaiming America's Natural Resources with improved technology to recycle and "re-engineering" recovered material, USA Industries prevents approximately 10,000 tons of landfill waste each year.

I will try to get my money back from Robbins. They are usually quite good with their quality. This is unusual for them.
Either way, I'll buy a Bosch.

Max could also be right about the regulator, especially on the original
one. The FLAP alternators seemed to have some issue that ate through the
regulator in 6 months or so.
Try the regulator first, if you've got the time. It's cheaper.

As long as I'm sitting here in the cold & wet , I might as well ponder the
wisdon of having purchased a $700 " cheap " truck that's needed over $3,000
worth of parts put into it , rather than paying the exorbitant price of $400
for a 100 % complete Mercedes trailer hitch with proper supports ,
electrical connections and even every single nut , bolt and washer carefully
removed , and putting that on my 300CD and then enjoying a faster , quieter
, smoother , _safer_ drive , with a radio that works and trunk space for
tools & goodies.....
NAH ! it was much more fun rebuilding an old truck I don't want to keep.
Or , not =8-^ .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 240 blowing alternators
If it just stopped charging & didn't make any death rattle , just replace the voltage regulator , it's under $20 for the better Bosch branded one , I'm on the road else I'd have the specific part # to get but others will have and post it for you , be aware the parts counter guy will try to B.S. you into taking the crappo ones he sells , be smart & order up two Bosch ones and save the second one .
FWIW , many " rebuilders " now bead blast the rotor and this roughs up the slip rings where the brushes ride so they wear out rather quickly . if you have a low buck alternator that died , try replacing just the voltage regulator as it comes with the new brushes as part of it , once the old brushes have worn out the slip rings have been polished smooth again so the new reglator should last longer .
I really cannot say to many good things about the Bosch branded regulator , it actually makes the wimpy original 55 ampere alternator work correctly and charge up to 14 volts much of the time .
Remember : _ALWAYS_ disconnect the ground cable off the battery before any electrical repair work ! I like to remove the battery & soap & water wash it then leave on the _lowest_ charge rating whilst I clean the accumulated leaves out of the battery box then replace the voltage regulator so everything is tip-top when I button it back up .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: RockAuto Discount Parts
One neat thing they have is : you can set it up to get notifications of closeouts of things for your specific vehicle ($10 Mercedes brake rotors etc.) .
I got it to do this for my '84 300CD Sports Cope but I don't know how I did it so I cannot make it notify me of things for my other vehicles .
I replaced the clutch in my 1976 GMC C2500 longbed pickup truck I bought
to drive to Oregon and collect my new Ural Solo sT Moto ~ I ignored the usual ' beware the bargain ' advice about buying cheap used vehicles and so have been forced to more or less mechanically rebuild it from end to end , I like everything about this truck *except* the l o n g b e d aspect......... it was only $700 with current tags & title and actually made it 30 miles to my home before expiring.....
Rock Auto provided me with a brandy new Daiken clutch and anciliaries (LOTS of them !) for under $200 delivered to my doorstep , this was less $ than anyone in L.A. wanted for just the clutch .
Of course , just before hitting the road , the distributor failed mechanically and a valve began leaking , the fuel pump died after only 36 years , I was able to find enough parts to overhaul the dizzy but the valve ill be addressed when I return , it has an irregular miss @ idle and I can hear one weak cylinder when I'm blowing & going down the highway too . a new fuel pump was only $20 , I'm not pleased it came from Korea but if it works , who cares .
It so far hasn't missed a beat and didn't slow down atall going up & over The Siskyou Moutains on the I-5 , I never had to give it more than 1/3 throttle .
I've had limited Internet connectivity since Friday last so pardon me if I miss any messages /questions .
