[diesel_mercedes] Re: Current thoughts for ATF for w126 / w123??

Okay-- as I understand it, dexron is a GM "branded" fluid- that GM essentially allowed to go "off patent.." So if a fluid "claims" to be Dex III, it's that they say so.

S'ok.. Not a big GM fan..

That said..

Essentially you're buying the reputation of the fluid manufacturer. Because no one is "checking them" to make sure they're actually producing a DexIII "meets or exceeds" product.

I've always liked Valvoline-- had good luck with their products.

So they've got two Dex/Merc products..

http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/automatic-transmission-products/automatic-transmission-fluid/33

and

http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/automatic-transmission-products/automatic-transmission-fluid/37

Now-- I'm not normally a fan of "high mileage" preparations. But I am apparently losing some ATF currently.. My thought was-- drop the pan, drain the tc.. Refill with the Dex/Merc Valvoline. (maybe I've fixed the leak replacing the lines/pan gasket) If not- then as fluid needs replaced, move to the dex/merc "extended mile.."

--and obviously I stop adding, if it stops needing more, versus filling the system with it.

Is there any logic TO my logic, or should I just sleep a little more??

I'd had a momentary consideration of looking at a royal purple/amsoil product.. Then I forgot.. I'm driving an old benz to save cash, not burn it.. :)

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Manuals

What Bobby said .

I often find older beat up Oner's Booklets that have stains or badly creased covers, the snobby types who will never read them anyway , won't touch them so often they can be had for $10 or _less_ .

The info therin doesn't go bad because someone beat it up .

I'm a Generous Motors fanboi but , the Ford Police Cars I service all seem just fine as were the various Ford products I've owned over the decades.....

Autolite glow plugs are just *one* item they simply don't care to have any QC on .

I don't buy BOSCH ones either most of the time .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Owner's Booklet for any OM617 equipped

I meant the owner's booklet that goes in the glove box .

This one too , is a must have for me .

ALL Factory Shop Manuals are important as even if you're not a Mechanic , the pictures are often life savers .

@ $20 for the whole engine manual , it's a bargain as you can print out as many or as few of the pages you want / need , scribble them up with On Hand Service notes as you go along and save or discard at will .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Silvia '84 300SD - ...mileage check - livin' the dream.. 290K mi / 28-MPG

Sounds good Barton .

I hope I wasn't the source of hype .

It's still snowy here in Boston , it snowed all last night .

Tom saw a rusy & dented 300CD in the parking garage after I passed out last night .

I'm *SO* glad I don't live here anymore , yes it's *very* beautiful but the salt & rust would eat up all my old vehicles in a year or three....

I bet you _do_ get killer mileage on that fuel mix ~ just adding ghe Power Service Cetane Booster makes the 240D with one near dead cylinder run AS NEW again , SWMBO even notices .

I've had a bad experience with Autolite glow plugs, too.  'Course, Ford hasn't owned the Autolite name since '73....

Sid,

I am a Ford fan.  I was pleased to find Autolites.  But, on this group, the consensus is that Autolites are bad.  My experience was negative, but that may be my engine's fault.

I'm planning a pan gasket/filter and tranny cooler oil line replacement this spring for my '84 300SD.

What are the current fluid recommendations for this.. Both fluid type and volume.. I am planning on draining the torque converter as well.. (IIRC, my 240D had a drain plug in the tc. Does the 300SD?)
