[diesel_mercedes] Need advice from an old member

I used to be a lurker years ago when I owned a 350 SD an then a 300 SD.  During this period I had accumulated some oil filters, air filter and fuel filters.  All new in the box.  I woudl like to know if any of you would be interested in buying these as a lot.  I have the following:

Mann PF 1050/1n Oil Filter, Qty 9

Mann WK 817/3x Oil Filter, Qty 2

Mann C 29200 Air Filter Qty 1

Fuel Filter 001 477 33 01 , Qty 2 no box

If any of you can use these please let me know.  I am not looking to make a lot of money on this. Just make me a fair offer and its yours.  I am located in Sunnyvale , CA. I can also ship for the actual shipping charges.

Thanks.  You can reply here or directly to me vvjk at yahoo

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 240d engine in Jeep acting up

NAPA sells a kit https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p/BK_7001006/

that detects exhaust gases in the coolant.  I've also used an exhaust gas analyzer at a local

independent auto repair shop.  CO2 measured in the 60PPM at the radiator neck.  Replaced the

head gasket and it was down to 4-5PPM.

At the same time cleaned the cooling system with oxalic acid crystals, then a rinse with water

or baking soda.  White vinegar works well too.

That was one of the clues I didn't see. There was no loosing of cooling water or graying of the oil. So I figured there was no breaks in the head gasket that would swap those two fluids. The one thing that didn't exist in last nights test was pressure in the cooling system. So there could be no way for cooling water to enter the cylinder (and adversely affect the combustion) if there was a crack. But since there was no air entering the cooling system I ruled out such a crack.  There is no sign of oil in the cooling water either. It is starting to look like it was a sticking valve, sticking ring or rings, and/or sticking piston in the fuel pump for that cylinder. And the MMO might have just loosened it/them up. I will know more this evening.

Tonight I am some combination of befuddled, encouraged, surprised, delighted, and cautiously optimistic. Let me 'splain. I came up with an idea to either prove or eliminate from consideration the possibility of a head gasket leak or a cracked head. Such a malady would not only add unwanted water into the combustion chamber at certain times in the cycle, but it would also force gas bubbles into the cooling jacket which would then find their way to the radiator. Seeing them is sometimes difficult so i came up with the device shown in the picture. This way any bubbles would rise through a relatively quite column of water and could more easily be seen. After an hour of idling the engine was up to temperature and had been for 30 minutes. Absolutely no sign of that steady stream of bubbles that would indicate a leak. But it was also not running rough either. Hmmmmm. This is a good thing to be sure and I think I know why. Last night I added a cup of Marvel Mystery Oil to both the crank case and the fuel. I have seen this stuff free up stuck valve lifters and return an engine that sounded like it had 3 loose rods to quiet smoothe runnings. Well it ran for a half hour or so last night and then I shut down. That got it circulated through both the oil and fuel systems where it could reside while dissolving sludge and varnish. And I think that is what must have happened. Since there was no leak into the cooling jacket that left rings, and valves. And as of this morning it occurred to me that it might also be an injection pump failure in that cylinders outlet. So I may have cured it by the use of the MMO. I will do this all again tomorrow and see if these results repeat. If it rins good for tomorrow's test I Will consider the issue closed. I won't ever know what was ultimately wrong. But I guess I will just have to live with that. I will let you know what happens. Peace.

If this does good running continues, I will become the de-facto poster boy for the virtues of MMO. At one point I was thinking complete overhaul. And now it may just have been some varnish from sitting for so long - over a year prior to my acquiring the car this engine came from. Quieting some noisy lifters is one thing. Saving an engine from a costly overhaul is so much more substantial.

I feel like I don't' want to jinx anything by saying too much. But I am getting hopeful here.

When in doubt, MMO can be the cheapest fix available - right up there with duct tape, paper clips, and clothes hangers. I felt the same thrill when I doused a non working rusted wall clock with WD 40 and brought it back to life 20 years ago.

Well Joe, you are most fortunate. You will be home to wish me a Happy 45th Anniversary on August 07, and a Happy 76th Birthday on September 07. No presents required, and my condolences on the UK's rugby trifecta against your mates last week. The pain should pass soon.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Automatic

Thanks, I talked to a local advance shop and saw that, but their detail picture wasn't clear.  There is some chance that they a talking about the later flange style shaft.  I will check further. In the past while looking for Sprinter brake parts, I found that their illustrations and part recommendations didn't match reality.

Thanks, there's the problem.  I really think the 300D axles will work, but I'd like aconfirmation.

I've replaced all four(I think) on my 2- 240's. Used cheap rebuilt, lifetime, around $80,  I think now they are all Cordones, they seem just fine. These type of axles are actually pretty tough and take abuse. Its amazing how long they last with bad boots. My Subaru son just replaced  both fronts on a 2006 Outback  while I was in Reno, they look just like our backs, also Cordones. 06 Subaru's are easier to do this now than in the 80's and 90's and a bit easier than rear Mercedes. The Mercedes are pretty easy. Best to do in a garage for sure. Max
