[diesel_mercedes] Wagon Seat Belts

Well ;

I went to a Mercedes junkyard that had an advert claiming they had 300TD seats, the ad had photos of the wagon but when I showed up they said "we've NEVER had a W123 wagon in here " .

So, after some back and forth where they said "no one ever gets into the yard because of insurance" they finally said there's a 1985 300D back there and walked me in to look at the interior parts .

Boy howdy was that place crowded with cars stacked up poorly, I was nerveous and didn't want to stay too long .

The yard guy was very nice and talked to my Brother about the business , sadly I couldn't hear much of it, he told me later .

I was able to get the driver's seat belt, 'A' pillar cover and the bottom little plastic cover, the yard guy gave me the two tools necessary to remove them with out breaking the delicate plastic bits, the price was fair and I'm happy with what I got .

I got my bits home and began a cleaning marathon, in the last two weeks I've collected many bits and bobs and want them all ready for installation .

The 'A' pillar cover looks great, slightly dirty and the MB Tex cover was coming unglued so I cleaned the inside part of it and began the re gluing, I ran out of wooden clothes pins before I got too much done but again, I'm pleased with the works accomplished to - day and the Pups were oh so happy to have me home all day where they can watch me and bark at will .

? Anyone have a single sheave alternator pulley ? . I need one or two, should be the same as most anything if you have an old alternator lying around you don't need .

Bogy said he had Wagon seat belts for me but balked when I asked for decent photos so I'm still out there looking  n case anyone finds a W123 wagon of any year, I can clean them up and I'd rather dismount them my own self .

TIA,

More works to - morrow .

-Nate

[diesel_mercedes] Poor Fuel Economy '82 240D Slushbox

Hi Mark ;

Thank you .

? Wouldn't  bad cam timing (late I assume)  show up with lack of power ? .

It starts *instantly* and has good power and zero smoke .

I noticed it maybe shifts up later than it did before, could late shifting be causing the engine to run higher than normal RPM's and waste that much fuel ? .

I just did the brakes and the pedal is high and rock hard, no hot asbestos stink and it rolls easily, I guess the next time I have it home I can raise up the wheels one at a time and spin them by hand but that sounds far fetched .

[diesel_mercedes] AC quit, trouble shooting

Max ;

If it's leaking slowly there's a dye refrigerant you can add when charging it up, then you'll hopefully _see_ the dye wherever it's leaking / weeping and can -maybe- fix that .

I was told the other day that using later model W126 receiver/dryers and expansion valves changes them to O-Ring seals, usually much less leaky over time .

Rob, yes, there's a relay I forget where but just see if the compressor works, use your teat light to check if it has power to one of the two leads on it and ground the other, it will begin to run, be aware you'll grind it to dust in short order doing this is the coolant level is too low but it's a useful basic YES/NO test .

Keep us posted, O.K. ? .

Good luck on that one. I gave up on my 240's ac, after replacing most everything. When it worked it worked really good. My problem was a  slow leak everytime. First time it lasted 2 years,then one year, then just part of the summer. I got tired of that and got a new car, ac works great. Max  P.S still have my 2 -240's to sell. Its hard to sell cars from the side of a mountain 100 miles to the nearest big city(Spokane)

Hi,

My AC quite the other day, and I'm not sure if the compressor has gone,
or just isn't getting a signal from the controller.

Is there an easy way to test the compressor?

Every once and awhile, I've had the AC not work one day and be fine the
next, so I thought it might start working again, yet it hasn't.

I tried bypassing the low pressure switch to see if it had leaked, yet
the compressor didn't engage.

I heard the '85 has another control box under the hood too.

Thanks

Rob

I wish it were that simple Mark .

I've been unhappy with the fuel economy since the engine overhaul .

As soon as the clear plastic intake screen remains 100 % clean, I'll yank the injectors and pop test them, then check the injection pump timing, maybe even do a compression test although it starts *instantly, has terrific throttle response  and so on so I doubt any low compression issues .

AC used, mixed city & freeway driving, 383 miles, 20.2 MPG ~ this is awful . my Wagon gets better fuel economy than this thing does .

A little bit of fungus crud in the primary intake screen, I ran all over town looking for another one but couldn't find so I cleaned the old one with starting fluid as best I could in the filling station .

Low fuel lamp lit at 328 miles .

No smoke, I wonder what's the deal here .
