[diesel_mercedes] locks, mostly

Just bought an 84 300D runs good but idles very rough any suggestions? I plan to change oils and filters and adjust the valves.  Anything else?  Also the PO loaned the car to a friend who lost the key.  Someone did a semi butcher job on the dash and installed a lock and replacement key.  These obviously don't fit the doors and trunk.  Any suggestions or does someone have a set of front door locks, a trunk lock and keys.  If the vacuum system worked, I'd only need a driver's door lock and a trunk lock for safety.  The car shuts off, but I don't know the condition of the rest of the vacuum system.

That is a great link because after all of the wiring diagrams there are a multitude of very good photos.

[diesel_mercedes] Becker Wiring Diagrams

THANK YOU Bill ! .

Tom bought a later model 300SDL with the 6 cylinder Diesel engine and it has some wretched ,incompetently installed Panasonic radio that didn't work well so we got the nice silver band Becker from a '91 W-1123 and he wanted the corrcet color codes .

*SO* glad your Daughter was in a W-126 instead of a Kia , Fiat , Cobalt etc. .

Yes , all the receipts you have , can be used to give additional value over the Blue Book misery their Ins. Co. will offer you , I did just this when a crackhead ran into my parked VW Camper some years back as I'd just finished installing a rebuilt engine and four new tires, battery etc..... I copied and forward every receipt I could find for it .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Agnes is gone.

The MB did what it was supposed to do, save the people inside.
Our old Volvo 240 had the same fate in January, while saving my wife's life.

Glad to hear your daughter's OK, beside the fibula break.

Start looking up and documenting comparisons for Ins, as they'll try to
low ball you, from the start.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Agnes is gone.

good points Lawrence!
I used the argument of "like condition replacement" to do pretty well
once on a '69 Lincoln MkIII.
Depending on state laws and such, the "other" party pays you, so you can
replace your car with a very similar (all must admit it may be
impossible to match all details) auto.
As stated, receipts will help, but photos and condition statements from
any professional mechanic that knew or worked on it, are pretty much as
good.
The key to my argument was getting adds from several sources, for
similar cars "for sale" and arguing "fine, your responsibility, as
stated, is to replace my car, not give me money, so, you here are cars
that seem acceptable (but I'll need to inspect to be sure), go ahead and
buy one and have it shipped here to me. if you can get a "deal", great.
But you know, with this language, A court will compel you to buy it or
give me that same price, plus shipping, and the reasonable cost of a
rental car, for the time this goes on. I'll also tag anything and
everything on I can, including getting a lawyer and their fees"

It took two weeks for them to respond, but agreed to my price in cash,
and I dropped the demand for shipping, inspection, and legal fees.

just a thought, good luck

Henry

These cars are life savers litterly.  However now comes the insurance companies.  Devalualing older cars.  You will have to have every reciept, go to court to prove your loss.  You might have 10k into your car and they will fight you tooth and nail for every penny.  Good luck with the insurance company.  That being said I paid 1700 for my 240 D and got 3200 plus my car back after a rear ending.  That bought me a used 300TD.  Sold the 240 for 900 a few years later and got a LEAF.  Love the diesels and run them on veg oil but truly the electrics are my goal.  AND so much for diesels not catching fire.  DO YOU KNOW WHY IT CAUGHT FIRE.  Inquiring minds would like to know.  Was your engine oily or dirty....Sounds like it was in good shape.  Did the new paint have anything to do with it?  Did you redo the engine compartment?  Lawrence Rhodes

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Digest Number 5908

Adding my sorrow for the loss of the car and joy at the fact you're daughter's going to be ok.

As for what you put into it - you won't get it all back, but in my case, my son was hit by a careless soul while in our 1978 Saab 99 (he was fine, another amazingly engineered and safe Euro-wagen for it's vintage), which until that moment was pristine. I supplied docs and parts receipts and the like to my auto insurance company - (USAA), they paid $3300 on a car that was 36 years old. Not sure if it was the company or the car that inspired the adjuster, but amazingly, they paid and she's back on the road - and he's the beneficiary of a "learning opportunity" that couldn't have come any other way....

first and foremost, so happy your daughter is ok.
second, send some lovin to those engineers, who made that car as safe as
it is.

third, mourn, and pour a drink for a departed hero, who sacrificed it's
metal body and useful life, to save a loved one.
