[diesel_mercedes] Brakes

I have a 1980 240 D with a manual transmission. The car sits most of the winter, and the Pennsylvania winter was very cold. After driving the car in the country  for a while, say longer than thirty minutes the Brake petal just goes away, No petal. I changed the rear Caliphers and lines with a used set of caliphers. It worked fine for a few days and then it came back. After stopping, with out hitting anything. :-)  The petal slowly comes back and the brakes are nice and hard. I do not think it is a vacuum problem, because  the petal goes to the floor.  I have not been able to find any rebuild kits. thanks for any help bob k.

RE: [diesel_mercedes] 300D Generator

Ok, Bill, This is starting to make sense. It's 220.00 for the new bolts. So I can see why they were not replaced. But once they start a stretch, the motion could be exponential.
Thanks for the link, and help for now.

At some point, Mercedes used head bolts that were meant to be replaced when the head was taken off. Then they started using bolts that you torqued to a certain stretch.

A can of worms if that's what you've been handed. Not like the olde days.  Bill in Oregon

Thanks Bill,  I have a Hayes book, but it's crap. It did occur to me about the glow plugs, but it's so hot here. In Texas most  most diesel engines start right up. I was going to take chance on the valves, but now I think I will pull that head. The kid I bought it from said he broke the chain after a head gasket replacement, at startup. So It broke at a low RPM. I'm more worried about why the head gasket was blowing than the vales being bent. So I wanted to check his bolt torque's and look for cracks anyway. After looking at the configuration of the cooling system I'm thinking it was designed for cold weather. So I think I'm going to block the bypass and force all the water through the radiator. We will see, let me get a startup for now.  Thanks for your help. I'm sure there will be more questions.

I have replaced a timing chain on a 1961 190Db; you need to get a book or set of instructions on doing the job right.

In addition to the starter, you need to wire up the glow plugs and then be able to turn them off.

You need to check out the valves also to see if they were damaged when the chain broke.

I was looking for a diesel engine to couple to a 3 phase generator, and found a 300D. The guy I bought it from had broken the timing chain somehow. Other than that he had built a great engine. First question: When I install the timing chain can I get the vac pump 180 degrees off? Second question can the engine run with no wiring other than the starter.

Yes I'm crazy! Maybe. but I believe a man has to have an incredible challenge going on to be happy.
