Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Driving every day in Wisconsin

My cars are both 240's that I put block heaters in. I do remember thinking a turbo would make this job more difficult. I might have removed the starters to get the old plugs out.Which is pretty easy on 240's. That was very hard on one of them,to get the plug out. 19mm allen plug, it took a 6 to 8ft cheater pipe and a strong 18yo boy on the end of that. I thought the engine was gonna pop out of the car it took so much force. Probably should used a torch to heat it up. Anyway bottom line is both cars start easy after running block heater. Only 400W, so about .04 cents per hour around here. Max

Depending where you are in MD you might not have a problem.  We're on the east coast of Delaware and this is the first time in 5 yrs that I added heat in the morning.  At 10 deg, it seemed like a good idea.  The PO of my 85 300SD added a heat coil in the lower hose.  I'm not thrilled with the amount of heat in the hose, which is why I haven't used it after the first test untill Monday,  but it does work.

Hi, I was concerned about the lo temps in MD last week. So the usual was done....newer battery, starter, glowplugs, changed oil to to usual rottella t6. And she fires up with 3 recycles of the glow plugs on first try.. Block heater died some years ago, just when I moved to MD....never needed it in SF bay area.

So what I usually do is plug in one of these electric cooking coils and place it just below the oil plan to heat up the oil. But an easier thing  I do is to take about half a quart of engine oil, in a glass jar (old spaghetti sauce), heat in MW till it is very hot, and pour it into the engine oil crankcase. Dont know how much it helps, but I do this at v cold temps. MD rarely gets below zero.

Looked at all those alternatives to blockheater, eg dipstick heater etc.,but did not care for any of them. No mechanic wants to take on removing the old blockheater.

Someone put a Kats 12010 circulating tank-type heater on mine. It's old, but still works a charm.

I am just south of baltimore, so prolly a few degrees warmer. Yes, I did look at those heating coils in the lower water hose...maybe I will do those if need be. I think dieselgiant sells them, with the heater coil installed...pricey though at around $100. But it is prolly a diy also.
