In Mexico, to catch a wild nauga,(ones with party hats or lampshades on) the sound of tequila being poured into a glass brings them into your living room, you can often catch the tame ones the tame way.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Fair market value for an old diesel

Chas or Lawrence,

There is another problem you are leading people into.  The collector car insurance is only valid for very limited mileage.  Many people on this list use their cars as daily drivers.  If they get the collector car insurance, they may be denied if they have a claim.

If anyone decides to get collector car insurance, be sure to be very explicit that you drive tens of thousands of miles per year.

MKJ - good luck and keep fighting to get a reasonable settlement.

With all due respect, although frustrating, this is not "another example of an
insurer trying to rip off a customer". Rather, the customer has chosen to
insure his vehicle only for fair market value as a used car, and not for an
agreed value or a collector car value. As a result, the insurance premiums were
based on this lower value risk to the insurer, and the customer never
complained when the premiums were lower.

Now that he has a valid claim, he is upset that the insurer is ripping HIM
off. If he chose to purchase "agreed value" or collector car insurance, the
actual cash value would have been established before the contract was signed,
and before any premiums were charged, and the insurer would have based the
premiums on the increased risk of the higher agreed value.

The ironic thing here, is that specialty car insurers who write agreed value or
collector policies, also recognize that collectors drive very few miles and
take exceptional care of their cars. As a result, these specialty policies are
usually considerably cheaper than conventional fair market value policies, and
this should be a lesson to all of us on this list.
Having said all of that, he now needs to embark on a research mission to find
all favorable values for his car, including NADA and Kelly Blue Book (KBB) and
Edmonds and Auto Trader. But, he needs to look at the collector car values on
these sites and not just the used car values. He should also track the auction
results ofr Basrret Jackson, and all of the other investment car auction sites.

He also needs to tell the company that if they can find him a similar
condition car for 4K, he will accept that amount. Otherwise, they need to pony
up a more fair value for a replacement ride.

The insurer has programs to show several vehicles for sale at lower values and
will produce this as evidence. I have requested the copy of this report, and
have actually called each of the sellers and dealers and found that the values
are often either false, very old sales, or blatent fabrications. Often the
dealer admits that the transmission had a noise and that the car was wholesaled
for the low price.

A diligent search, and advocating on your own behalf will increase the offer
substantially, but he won't get to the maximaum values. If he is not up to the
task, he should hire an attorney or professional adjuster who is familiar with
collector car values. Then he should buy proper "agreed value" insurance for
future losses.

My wife had a wreck in a simalar set of standards.
As I under stand it. The only way to get what a car like yours valued at true
replacement cost .
It must have had an agreed upon value policy before it was involved in the
crash.
Other wise it is just an old MBZ with over 200,000 miles.
We live in a country that still rates cars on a 100,000 mile depration
secdule. Once past that number no matter how old the car is it is valued at
half the top book rate and goes down from that for other considerations.
We got $1500 for a car that cost more than $6000 to come close to replacement.
The car had less that 110,000 on it. It was a `95 Caprice LTZ . Like a loaded
SS with a bench seat. The SS would have paid over $5000 for the same year.

It's either dirty filters, bad fuel or both.  As someone else said, start with the filters, both of them.  Good idea to have replaced the hand pump as it can introduce air into the sistem.

Tomorrow is D day, 240D that is!  Hopefully, it will make it home under it's own power.

[diesel_mercedes] Coupe Safety Triangle Clip

Interestingly , my 1980 300CD used the standard clip but my 1984 300CD uses the early clip used in W-116's and early W-123's , Tom says this is a discontinued part so I kept looking and recently ran across a fairly decent 1977 240D in Pick-A-Part , it had the early clip so I ever so carefully removed it and yesterday fitted it to the trunk of my '84 300CD , replacing the goofy looking if functional rubber bungie cord....

Yes , most older and some newer vehicles have this trait , the cooler , more condensed air does it .

Water injection is an old thing , it does seem to work but again , in your Mercedes Diesel , only a very *tiny* bit of mist else you risk serious engine damage .

Old air cooled anythings run WAY better in the fog , get higher fuel mileage too .

At 11:15am today my car was running and purring like a kitten.  I got to drive it 4 miles to Texaco to put more diesel in.  Before we got back to camp it barely ran.

Kevin replaced the hand pump.  Still runs like crap.  What was supposed to be a surprise quick trip into town to drive my car home, turned into an all day ordeal ending with us leaving the car there, but we did bring the exhaust home since Dan the Muffler Man is down here.

Kevin's been working so hard on this.  He got it running and videoed it for Valentines. He really wanted to get it home so I'd have it for my b-day. :(  Sigh.  Talk about frustrating.

I've attached a link to my public folder in Drop Box since yahoo kept giving me errors when I tried to upload the videos to the group.

[diesel_mercedes] what a great car

Hi gang!!
some of you may remember my adventure, this summer, coming back from my
second drive to Colorado and back, where, I lost a radiator hose.......and
things went downhill, from there.

Well,
the SDL has been sitting in the garage, since then, waiting for me to have
the courage (initially, to see just what got screwed up) and then, the time
(super busy year, this year), to dive in.

Well, today was the day!!

I replaced the plastic reservoir (from my donor SDL), hooked up the hoses,
and turned on the key.
The glow plug light went out, and I hit "start"........heck, it started like
it had run yesterday!! And it has literally been sitting since late Early
August! Fired right off, ran a little rough, for a few minutes, then
smoothed right out.......

Then, the testing:
no water in oil. good.
no vapor out the exhaust, either at start up, or while idling. good.
running smooth and quiet (well, for that engine). good.

So, I took her for a test drive.........it took the heater a while to purge,
so was blowing cold air, for a while. But, I over filled the reservoir, so,
there was plenty, once it "burped". I went up and down steep things, and
such, to work the air out..........
Went up a 6% slope for 6 miles, at 70 mph (it'd go faster, but those pesky
curves and highway patrol slowed me down).
It go up to about 90 deg.C, at most, with my foot buried, whenever I could.
Some soot, but not bad, initially......after a few mins, none at all
visible.

so, I feel the engine came through its "high temp ordeal" fine.

Now, I have to tear into the front end.......it developed a "death wobble"
on the way across Utah and Nevada.........dang. I think it's the "breaking
struts" or whatever you call them........with the rubber ball and socket set
up.

End of report:
Henry

<hope this doesn't post twice>

well...this has been a long time coming.

My name is Tom and I am the proud owner of a black 1981 300td (name of Olesia).
I have been on this list since I first got the car almost 2 years ago, and read and study every post, oh...also laugh!

It's really great to know where to turn to for "my fellows", regardless of age, gender or location who share my love for the older diesel merc's.

I like to tell folks that my car was driven here from Stuttgart by way of Beirut-on-a-bad-day. (she looks as though she's seen some war, and carries scars to prove it.)

Even though I live in Irvine (home of the Classic Center), I still haven't gone to check it out or hunt down the other Tom for questioning...

Anyways, HELLOOOO o oo oo o oO o oo. sorry to be such a gnome, troll, silent hermit, etc.

Now, my QUESTION:
It's concerning my vacuum system. I know I have some issues here...
Most of the time (when it's dry) I have to manually go and lock all my doors and check the hatch lid.
When it is wet (not just cold and wet), like now with light rain, everything works perfect: car shuts down immediately, all the doors lock and hatch AND fuel door lock without a problem. I'm guessing this is how the system is supposed to work (duh, right?)
Now I know I need to do some hunting to find what causes this leak, just wanted to bounce one of my "issues" off some more experienced minds.

I have asked the local MB dealer, my mechanic (who specializes in diesel mercedes), and a friend who is an all-hats mechanic & I get 3 totally confusing answers that all involve lots of money and them thinking I am crazy for wanting to fix this money-pit.

any thoughts?

again: when wet (as in rain OR heavy-fog/overnight dew) the engine shuts off quick & all the locks close when I lock the driver's door (let's not mention the hard shifts for now [whoops!]. when dry, it's a walk-around to manually open and lock all doors.

I guess I should mention that when dry, if I turn off the ignition and exit and lock the driver door while the engine still runs, all locks will close.

never had any problem with the locks opening/unlocking. i.e. if I turn off the engine and wait for final shutoff (which seems to vary), all locks pop up.

sorry to sound like such a neophyte. I can't even begin to describe some of the other problems I am having. suffice it to say I have had much help and hope just reading the posts and learning what does/doesn't work & what to expect.

thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Here in Mexico we have lots of nauga's (that is the correct spelling)
we have side hill nauga's and flat land nauga's the side hill Nauga hides are used on seat backs the flat land nauga hides are used on the seat parts, as they have higher flatulence resistance.
