Tony ;
When salt or sugar causes a piston to sieze , there's always lots of visible scuffing damage on the tiny bits of cylinder liner & piston skirt...
I'm betting your diagnosis is dead bang .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: BioD E300
Oh boy,
I say crawling to a dim corner, putting on a pointy hat and pulling something old and smelly over me to hide under.
Thank you very much for the quick orientation. I still don't get it though. I have a friend who runs a cogen based on this engine so I'd like to run it past him if that's OK.
The wvo I pick up is full of actual salt and pepper , bcb's and all manner of contaminants like cig buts and otherf rubbish. Nowadays I've got my people complying to some extent but they keep getting new kids in who think it's OK to throw in the odd napkin even. I have found cutlery and mice too......
So, I let it settle out (water and gunge falls to the bottom - great compost) then I suck from the top through a siv, then through cut off jeans legs (rated at about 15 micron, most diesel filters are rated at 40) before centrifuging, water and crud are separated out - you would be amazed at the crud. The way I do it I get down to about 1 micron (yup, did have it tested long time ago) so my wvo is clean. The viscosity is adjusted by heat and I play safe there too, my little electronic do dad will not allow me to switch over until I get to 75c and it won't let me switch off without purging. Coming up on 7 years of this now.
For me it's a question of freedom. I'm a pathetic poor pensioner but I need to go places when I want to. Here 1 liter of diesel costs 14:-, (Swedish kronor) my nearest shop is 30 km away, 60 km round trip or 84:- every time - I can't do that. Neither could I visit my kids (600 km distant) and friends if I had to pay the going rate.
I also heat my house with wvo. 5 cubic meters so far this year (long and unusually cold winter this time) and probably another 500 liters till spring. I've still got a reserve of about 4m2 but I need to get busy collecting whilst I can. I fear for the future.
What percentage of your disposable income goes to Big Oil - sorry, just curious.
/G.
Grump, the Detroit 6v92 is a two stroke, the piston stopped, with enough force to break the cylinder liner in two at the inlet ports. The piston was gone into little pieces and the connecting rod was bent like a pretzel. Did not bother to check the exhaust valves or cam as it was obvious the motor was not worth rebuilding.
Possible causes;
An injector stuck open and washed the walls.
A ring broke,
The piston broke,
Cyl head or gasket failed catastrophically tho there was no creaming of the lube oil but there was antifreeze in the pan because the liner broke. Something went through the turbo & shredded it, the muffler was full of antifreeze.
So since a good motor costs something between $10 & $20K by the time you get it installed, I cannot take any chances.
Does a centrifuge take out contaminants that are in solution, as salt and sugar would be?

[diesel_mercedes] Re: BioD E300
Well, Brian we are over the tears, but thank heavens for towing insurance, saved us about $3K. And the new motor is sweet, we lucked into an out of frame rebuild with very few miles on it, they just got it running then dropped a crane on the truck it was in. We bought the engine from the scrap yard.

Tony, it's still snowing. I just heard this weeks weather report for Colville. Snow today, high 40 low 25, snow tomorrow, high 40 low 25, same next day, same next day after that, same at least till Sunday. But at some time spring will come. In fact when the snow gets mushy, then we know it's spring. Max

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: BioD E300
That's really weird - did you find out why the piston stopped? What did the rings and valves look like? Was your timing OK? Any breaks on the rockers, any uneven wear on the cam?
Why do you suppose that washing and super filtering will help. A centrifugal filter would sort all that anyway.
I don't think it could have anything to do with wvo either. Please expand upon your thoughts.
/G.
I was running my Detroit Diesel on a mix of filtered WVO and petro D, did about 5000 miles & then one of the pistons stopped while the other 5 kept going - $12,000 later I decided that there was more to running WVO than just filtering. If and when I use it again I will filter it wash it,( to get out the salts and sugars) dry it, & filter it again.
I do not think the WVO caused the failure, but since I am not sure I pay the $500 per tank full, (144 gal tank) for petro D.
