I just got in from poking around under the dash again and found what I believe is the switch. It's at the very top of the pedal assembly and quite inaccesible. Thinking I'd have to at least partially remove the pedal assembly to gain access, I looked in the Haynes manual again and found a diagram of the assembly complete with switch. It shows up in the wiring diagram as well.
Looking at the wiring diagram, it appears that the low brake fluid switches also actuate this light. Tomorrow, I might see if I can somehow close one of the low-fluid switches to confirm that every thing else is OK with the circuit before I tear into the pedal.
I'll keep you posted.

As far as I know the brake light comes on when your front pads wear thin and maybe if low on fluid. P.S. My 1980 240 has been parked since November, I am getting ready to put a battery in it and get it going so I can make sure its ready for a run to California in April.Max

I replaced the bulb with a known good one but it still doesn't work. I did have the key in the 'on' position. Next step is the brake switch. I looked under the dash near the pedal and didn't see anything that looked like proper switch. There's no mention of it in my Hanyes manual and I couldn't find anything on this group and through internet searches. The light DOES turn on when the p-brake is applied with this car, right?

[diesel_mercedes] 240D parking brake light switch?
I have a 1980 240D. My parking brake light hasn't worked since I got it about 4 yrs ago. Well, after burning out a set of parking brake shoes, I really want to get that light working. I replaced the bulb with a known good one but it still doesn't work. I did have the key in the 'on' position. Next step is the brake switch. I looked under the dash near the pedal and didn't see anything that looked like proper switch. Re: [diesel_mercedes] No 3-4 shift
Thanks, Rob. It's on my agenda to do that this afternoon, weather permitting.
It only lost high gear so I hope it a simple fix. I'll keep you posted.

Did the 3rd & 4th just go out while driving? Have you checked your fluid
level? I have a '85 300D CA, which lost its 3rd & 4th, and it ended up
being the planetary gear inside which came loose and spun; this is an
issue with this tranny (722.416). Only the '85 CA models use this
tranny, at least for the 300D, and I think the same for the SD. Before
you freak out, drain some fluid, if it's full of metal bits, it's toast.
Hopefully it's something else. I found a used tranny and swapped it in.
The 300D and 300SD use the same tranny, though the tail piece is
different, mechanical vs electric speedo. The tail piece is swapable.
That's what I had to do.
