[diesel_mercedes] tire prices rising

My tire distributor told me the new approximately 30%  import tax on tires is going into effect in 'December.

This will also affect American made tires also since higher quality tires will not be selling for the same price as cheap Chinese  tires. They will probably  raise prices accordingly.

bottom line..........If you are going to be needing tires in the reasonably near future, now is the time to buy.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Anyone convert gasser W123 to diesel?

I would ask the old timers at MB Star who have been around since the stone age. If it has been done or thought about, they have done it.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Anyone convert gasser W123 to diesel?

Funny about you having a grey-market 123 250 carb-gasser.  There's one of these in the U-Pull-And-Pay in Aurora.  Bright red with chin spoiler, smooth black vinyl seats with red piping (not MB Tex), 4-speed manny.  It all looks factory.  Manual sunroof, manual windows, manual HVAC.  It still has the big Solex carb if you want to try to get yours back up.

Yes, your proposed conversion is completely do-able.  Between the two cars, you've got all the parts you need.  I really doubt any drilling or cutting of holes will be needed.  I haven't done this, exactly, but I'm in the process of putting a 5-cylinder turbo into an '86 Jeep XJ.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Anyone convert gasser W123 to diesel?

Hi Gang,

I have a beautiful gray market '83 250. 2.5 liter straight 6 that needs a rebuild. Plus, someone before me replaced the carb with a Weber, so it's not communicating with the auto that is showing signs of age (takes a couple seconds to engage reverse). I have an 81 240D with manual transmission that I've been using for parts and so was thinking about the possibility of converting the gasser/auto to diesel/manual. Is this something that anyone here has done? Would I be lucky enough for things to just drop in and bolt up? I realize that I'd have to swap ignition switches and would have to integrate the glow plug system. But before I get too far down the road thinking about this, is this even something that is reasonably doable? I don't mind drilling some holes and cutting some clearance notches here and there, but I'm not too interested in significant fabrication. Other than the tired engine/gearbox, it really is a nice car: shiny pea-green paint over nice condition olive drab M-B tex interior.

Any advice? If it's a big deal, I'll probably just sell it as is and concentrate on m other 12 (seriously) car projects.

Thanks!
