Stopped in front of the local hardware store & a fellow came up to me, & said he had a 300 D station waggon & I could have any parts off it that I want. Asked him how much he would charge, he said "It did not cost me anything, so you can have whatever you want no charge.
Gonna go over & have a look in a few days, its about 40 miles away.
[diesel_mercedes] Wow, was out for a tuesday drive.
[diesel_mercedes] Wash Your Bottoms
So, here I was, under my w123 300d putting new rubber donuts on the rear muffler. The old ones were a year old and could easily have gone another year. Anyway, I see these bright shiny nuts and bolts and cables and hoses, and I say to myself, "wow, my bottom is sure clean since it was steam cleaned or power washed, whatever they did. Now that I had it done, I will pay more attention next time around. Did not see any visible damage, on balance I would do it again. That was the first time in 15-20 years that I know of.
For whatever it is worth dept. - I ended up with an extra spare tire (195_70_14) on a Bundt rim which I will store unless someone is desperate.

Thanks. Yeah, mine has 250k on the odo but 100k since a factory new engine was installed so I should be in the clear as far as rod bending goes.

I finally got around to checking my fuel economy on my 'new' car. I was hoping that it would at least be in the same ballpark as my 240D (30MPG).
Conditions were 90% highway, light wind, 55-60 mph, round trip length: ~120mi, and no AC (doesn't work anyway).
For two trips like this I calculated it to be right around 35 mpg. I'm very happy about this. This car is faster, heavier, and quieter than my 240D yet is more efficient. R+D is a good thing.
