[diesel_mercedes] RE: RE: Passing Inspection/Emissions test

Thanks everyone for feedback and advise.

My 91-300D PASSED inspection and emissions with flying colors.  288K down, many more to go!

I'd run it to nearly empty and fill the tank with Dino Diesel and a good 3 Oz. of Power Service Diesel Kleen .

Interestingly , a fresh _HOT_  oil & filter helps reduce emissions too .

I have a 1991 300D due for its bi-annual emisssions test.  I usually use MMO with diesel fuel and add Diesel Kleen or SeaFoam occasionally.  I can get B20 at a truck stop once in a while, in which case I don't use any additive.  It doesn't appear to be a "smoker".  When I'm under heavy acceleration I think I see a little fog in the rear mirror, but hard to tell.  It does have 288K miles on it.

QUESTION:  When I bring it in for the emissions test, what is the best thing to have in the tank?  Straight Diesel, B20 or diesel and an additive?

I'm in RI, which I think is not as strict as CA.

Any advice?

[diesel_mercedes] RE: Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Auto

Nate,

I still miss my 1984-300CD for its character and looks, but for economy, I haven't regretted moving to the 124 bodied 300Ds.  My current 1991 300D with 289K miles just turned in a 31.7 MPG performance (511 miles / 16.1 gals). On my previous fill-up I added 16 oz of Seafoam which I'm sure helped.  I consistently get 500 miles per tank in mixed driving and occasional A/C use.  A/C not a necessity this time of year in RI.  Acceleration with the 124 is much better and I can cruise easily at whatever speeds the pack is doing on the highway.

[diesel_mercedes] wtb fuel pump for 1981 300d

Does anyone have any leads for me? I need the fuel pump asap.  One of the valves is leaking.
I am open to having it rebuilt if anyone nearby knows someone who can do that at a reasonable cost.
thank you!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] How much is my TD worth with free fuel.

I love San Francisco, but I am not going to move there just to buy your car and get free fuel. But, it is tempting.

I'm going to sell my beloved 1980 w123 Touring Diesel when the LIT C-1 becomes available.  I'm moving to electric and a car that will fit in my garage with my other car.  The TD is too big.  I get about 20 gallons a week of oil from my 6 sources in San Francisco.  So my question is how much is my TD worth with the gift of free oil?  No Air, Klimka climate control functioning only with heat.  Manual sunroof.  Power windows.  5 bunt rims.  front fender damage.  Single tank veg oil system.  Good seats.  Power antenna stuck up.  I think 6 to 8k but some have said 8 is too much to ask.  I figure I'm selling the car for a premium as it has free fuel.  The sources will go the the buyer of my TD.  In San Francisco so selling the car outside of the area will not benefit the new owner so it has to be a San Franciscan that buys the car to get full benefit.  I need to use the car for now so the catch 22 is no LIT C-1 no sale.  It is running very well.  Lawrence Rhodes...

So I woke up this morning to my 300CD turbo gone from its parking place.  Stolen right out from under my window.

Help!

I have full coverage on the car so first line of help will be to get the insurance to pay the worth of the car.  Completely original turbo coupe.  Never even a dent.  187000 miles.  New interior about one month old.

Second help is to find another.

Sad day in Houston

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Front End Greasing

hi Nate,

thank you for this information. I appreciate that you took the time to respond. I am still new to this so I will check all that out.

it is a very nice car and I am planning to keep it in service.

Well ;

It's a 40 year old Machine and Dollars to Doughnuts says at least _one_ owner along the way , didn't know or care it needs periodic greasing .

I'm not sharp on the 114 & 115 chassis , do the ball joints even have Zerk fittings ? . many older German cars have nearly invisible threaded plugs in the bottom of each ball joint , you're supposed to remove and install a Zerk fitting for greasing every 100,000 miles or so...... good luck getting any Mechanic apart from me to understand or do this....

If the removable plugs are there , _YOU_ cab buy Zerk fittings and install them , grease @ home and leave them in place .

I know it's routine for the sealed ball joints to go well over 300,000 miles sans lubrication (they're sealed) and never click .

My '82 240D's left ball joint began to click ever so slightly at 320,000 miles , SWMBO said she never heard it and the front end guy assured me it was fine when he wiggled the tires by hand , I know what the dangerous sound of a loose ball joint is so I told him , replace them anyway , I'll pay and Lo ! one was dangerously loose (about 13MM or 1/2" play) , the others were fine but changed them anyway .

So : if you put your 'Benz up on a rack and crawl 'round it with a bright light , looking for Zerks , they may be buried in old grease & road spooge , find them , wipe them off and faithfully grease them every oil & filter change @ 3,000 miles and you should be fine .

If , OTOH , your car has sealed suspension joints , tie rod ends and so on , you'll need to check them all annually and replace as necessary as soon as you can discern any play no matter how slight .

Your owner's booklet will tell you what and if , anything needs greasing .

I hope this was helpful .

Hi Nate,

Do you think my 71 220D needs more greasing on the front end then is typical?  A few months ago my lower ball joint popped out while driving and I don't understand why.  Scary.

I mean there was no warning and no play I don't think and no noise.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] W-I-D-E Tires

Oh Nate my friend small tires are best, but they don't look as nice as wide. There has to be a happy medium, which usally is stock size. They have been tested. But I do want my S Class to have 10" wide rears. But I wouldn't try driving them in the snow.

 Oh Max ;

When will you ever learn that the things the kiddies do are always the best ? .

All those smashed cars from hydroplaning in dewy pavement don't mean a single thing ~ WIDE tires show the world you're a MANLY Man , right ? =8-) .

So go find some bling bling 22" chrome rims and stop all this Old Man whining jazz .

Then : GET OFF MY DAMN LAWN !! .

        Max Griped :

I just called Les Schawb to see about tires for my 02 Legacy. It's got these horrible 225's. I told them I wanted something like 195's, which is what I have on my 240 4 spd. Nice tires. Anyway I really pissed the guy off because I told him those wide tires really suck. Of course my tires are considered all season, which is the biggest joke of all. 1/2" of snow and the Subaru turns into a sled, I can't hardly drive it with those wide boats. Of course I have spiked snow tires to put on but usually in spring and fall you get stuck with the summer tires once or twice. Anyway the narrowest tires they have that will fit my car are 205's. Better than the sled tires I guess but it's a fact in snow, narrow tires are best. Since I don't drive at Dayonta I hate those wide tires. Gripe, gripe, bitch, piss moan. Lit my stove this morning. Then I have to bang my rear view mirror into place on Mary (harder than it looks in the guys video). Next, will finish my order for nuts, bolts, diesel purge, gaskets, etc. to Autohaus. And finish up with washing & waxing both cats, maybe tackling fixing Martha's driver seat and replacing map case on the drivers side.
