RE: [diesel_mercedes] 1980 300sd will not turn over after short/long drive

First I am not conversant with the specifics of that 300SD.  In general, DC likes good clean

grounds, so as you do the install be sure any ground wires are in good order, the terminals

are tight, no fraying, etc.  Check the ground connections on the battery.  Check all your connections from the battery, all should be squeaky clean.  Dielectric grease is a good help

in sealing out corrosion.

That neutral safety switch could be the problem, or the linkage that makes contact could be loose, worn, etc.

Diesel Giant suggests using a Ford starter solenoid.  Have you tried bypassing the solenoid?

Good luck, patience pays off.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] 1980 300sd will not turn over after short/long drive

We recently acquired a 1980 300sd with about 125k miles on the clock. First time out, we drove about 20 miles to town to get new tires. When the tech tried to start the car, nothing happened. No start, no turn over, no click. Nothing. Tried jumping. Nothing. Personnel pushed the car inside and put on new tires. Pushed car out. Contacted po and was told that the same thing had happened a couple of time in the past. Po said he thought it might be neutral safety switch. Car started after moving gear shift thru the gears several times. Ordered new switch. New switch came yesterday. No time to put it on. Drove car to town today and after refueling it would not start. Moved thru the gears many many time. No start. After several hours returned and the car started right up. Sounds  like something electrical is heating up and not working. Does the neutral safety switch have any electronics inside? Could the started/solenoid be getting hot from driving? In the morning I am going to put the new switch on and see what happens. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I will post what happens after new switch and driving.

AC is still dead but it's running fine , I adjusted the valves recently .

387 miles 24.2 MPG .

It's very consistent freeway or in town .

For now I'm finished tinkering on it , all the windows and door checks work as - new again and i added the plastic vapor barriers , replaced the slightly cracked driver's side door card and up graded the driver's arm rest to full length

To - day I washed and waxed it ~ boy that's a LOT of car to wax~ I didn't actually wax the whole thing but it sure is shiny & pretty now .

I have to replace the rotted exhaust hangers with the improved R107 ones then I can give it back to SWMBO ~ she'll love it as I removed and shampooed all the carpets and did some serious de greasing etc. , etc......

I'm still looking for the third seat seat belts .

Here are a couple of leads. Contact the fellow with the third seat; at some point he might be willing to “break up” the belts from the seat.

You might want to figure out what the part number(s) is/are. Bill in Oregon
