RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Alternator out and tested good...now what?

DC voltage is sensitive to cleanliness.   All of the connections must

be squeaky clean.  Use the dielectic grease (spark plug grease) on the connections

to protect from corrosion.  Amazing how corrosion on a DC system will insuluate,

and thereby cause a low amp flow.  Battey terminals, starter motor, solenoids,

etc.  And grounds especially, clean those ground strap connections.

Lawrence,

Glad to hear you may have found the problem and had it fixed.

Thinking about your adventure:   Maybe your car originally had the junction box, but since it was in the way of fixing the collision damage, it was eliminated.  On my car, (79 300CD), the junction box has been useful several times.  I would suggest the next time you are in a PAP or looking at a donor car, you get the junction box.  Then your long term plan could be to "restore" it.

Bobby

Nate,

Don't rush your bad back, but I would appreciate it if you could post it.

I like the Innova that Walmart has, but, like you, I would prefer to be able to put the meter up higher.

I hope he figures it out Lawrnece .

There _is_ a junction box , my '78 and '80 300CD's both had it....

I had a couple charging / wiring issues there but it's been years and I have forgotten the details .

O.K. Bobby ;

I cannot imagine why you'd want the crappo corded one but I will now make a concentrated effort to get the info to you .

I posted it once long ago .

It has a tape thing on the back of it making it easy to mount wherever you want it .

That's it  Bill ! .

See how the 8th one down has a grey screen instead of the yellow(ish) one ? that's the crappy one that Tom got stuck with .

Hopefully he'll see this and order up the good one for $16 including free shipping .

IMO ; _everyone_ here *needs* one of these to avoid getting stuck ~ as soon as it goes below 13 V when you're driving , go home or to the garage for repairs , you needn't get your hands dirty nor stuck with a bum alternator .

THANX Bill ! .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Alternator out and tested good...now what?

Just another thing to check. Are your glowplugs staying on longer than
they should?
Recently, mine were and it was trashing the battery.
If they are on, the glowplug light would be on.

Surprising that the lights stayed on but the battery measured 6 volts under load even with or without the lights on. Turn signals didn't work. Parked in front of the house hooked up the charger. Got my daughters Honda Civic and made it to work a bit late. I guess it's time to explore the junction box under the intake manifold. The colors coming out of the alternator are two white positive and one blue negative. All the lights seem to go on when starting. Starts great with a fresh battery. I cleaned all the surfaces of the connections. I hate reaching in under stuff. Anybody else have the old style junction box location? Lawrence Rhodes..........
