[diesel_mercedes] massive betrayal

lookee at the diesel 300 the folks across the pond get. and is that the same engine the sprinters got? they should have offered it. heck, mopar catalog should have offered a conversion. i always felt the 300 with 4 wheel drive and a diesel would be closer to the heart of the w126 than the last 3 S series. then again, when us oil refused to crack crude to make ultra low sulfur diesel, that kept the overseas diesels away. then us oil said they'd do it, so the diesels came. except us oil didn't do it right and all the poor diesels choked on sulfur. so now us oil claims to make ultra ultra low, which is really the ultra low they were supposed to make the first time around. well, now's the time for Chrysler to bring this car in. I wonder if the diesel heads would spring for it. maybe not the benz lovers, but the truck drivers and vw folks, and all the diesel magazine readers. and there was some talk by some bloggers about fiat diesels. that's not the head office though. hmmmm.
                 phooiie!
too emotionally drained to curse with gusto.

Had the same problem with my 73 Dodge PU. Everything tested ok but on
the truck there was no charging. All circuits checked out for
"continuity" buttttttttttttttttttttttttttt what I didn't know was the
wire to energize the field coil was hanging by one strand of wire. It
would have continuity but could not pass enough amps to energize the
field coil. Possible????

Possible, it's on my list to check.  I remember a 124 Fiat that I had where the fuse for the field coil was inline under the dash.  Talk about a PITA to find.

A gut reaction . . . Just for fun check the glow plug relay and see if it is sticking on when it should be off. The glow plugs use more than the alternator can supply. So if they are not turning off when they should the symptoms you describe could be explained. Including passing the test at the FLAPS but still not charging the battery. Note: it may be an intermittent problem at this point. A temporary light wired to the tip of the #5 glow plug would work on either type of glow plug system.

My 83 300D has developed an interesting problem. After 2 or three days of normal day and evening driving the battery dies. The car is in NY and is driven 15 to 35 miles at a time. The battery is approx. 1 Yr old. Now the red light is coming on. with no load on the electrical system, clean battery and ground terminals, and a fully charged battery, it does dim somewhat with increasinng speed. The local Autozone tested the alternator in the car and a spare and said that both were good. I swapped out the alternator with the spare, one of my favorite jobs on this car, with the same result. I checked the brushes in the voltage regulator and cleaned the commutators on the spare before I put it in. The only thing that I can't verify is that the voltage regulator is working properly. My next step is to change the voltage regulator. I have another alternator that was working when the car was wrecked, but its under a couple of feet of snow. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was wondering if the glow plug relay was holding in, but haven't had a chance to check it.  I'll probably pull the plug after it starts.  I can hear it click in but I haven't determined if it opens.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Sylvia - 1983 300 SD - Major maintenance down under - "glowing" results (so far)

The maxim is true "it will be the most expensive used car you've owned - unless you do the work yourself"....

In my case, I do what I can w/ limited ability, time and shop space/tools (in that order) and know when a job is bigger than me.

Nearly all these were.

If you look at the repair receipt in the photo album, you'll see I blacked out the parts cost and labor costs...I'm happy to share details offline on request, but suffice to say I believe I got a major break on parts and labor based on relationship and volume. Out of respect for honest mechanics everywhere who have to make a living like the rest of us, I figured it would be best not to set unrealistic expectations. :^)

Parts cost was 3x the labor cost (ymmv) and as also previously
stated, the parts - for what they are (MB luxury import), age
and relative criticality to the car's safe operation, are still ridiculously cheap, even list price.

So you ask, how's it running?

So far, all operational demons appear to be banished. The Bosch regulator seems to be doing its job (don't know if they attempted to clean any terminals or parts of the wiring harness)...no unusual weirdness in nighttime operation, just the usual weirdness. As before, car rides on rails at all speeds...amazing the difference, wobble on decel is gone, as is a weird wobble on hard acceleration as well (thought it was rear wheel drive related, apparently not).

Started nicely yest AM @ 20 F after an overnight outside, glow plugs on for about 15 sec, engine warmer not plugged to the grid...just need to hold a slightly increased idle long enough to get the fluids flowing, then settles into normally noisy cold idle. Started w/in half sec of cranking.

After another 20 mi or so, I filled w/ "fresh" tank of winterized(?) Shell diesel w/ my own special blend of StarTron, Cetane booster & MMO. Oil on the dipstick fresh from the sump was the cleanest I've ever seen in this car, which isn't saying much compared to a gasser :^)

Mileage report yet to come, last one was dismal @ 15MPG, likely due to lots of idling by me when starting/warming up and by shop during repairs, loss of fuel during filter changes, cold weather...etc...etc...etc...did not do new injectors this time...

Questions for the day (apologies if asked/answered previously):

1). Is there any ad-hoc anyone can tell determine if the turbo is or is not working (given there's no turbo gauge like my 33 y/o Saab99)?

2). Are there tests of the vacuum pump operation that can be done w/ unit in the car, engine running?

thx,

barton
