Brian,

Ben should not be emperor, he is offering us something we can not have just like our friend down in Mazatlan keeps tempting us with pictures of places we cannot enjoy.

Why do some people on this board offer up hope like AC systems that are simple and easy to fix (except they are only on BMW's) or trips across the boarder; all temptations of the flesh that we cannot partake.

OK everyone it's Friday.  All he wanted to do was come home from work, he's been gone since Tues.  But noooo. Kevin's stupid F250 is being cantankerous, again.  He's replacing the starter AGAIN!  This is the THIRD starter!  Thankfully he's smart enough to get the lifetime warranty.  The first one was old I guess.  The second one was the wrong one...go figure a parts store giving you the wrong item?  No! It was just a hair too short and couldn't get a good enough bite on the fly wheel.  He kept thinking it was the fly wheel and was procrastinating the PITA job.  I kept saying it sounded like the starter and reminded him how it's not uncommon to get crappy new parts.  For some odd reason he decided to measure it.  Gee, it was the starter!  He put that one in around Thanksgiving.

I told him to look on the bright side...he's at work on concrete and has all of his tools there.  It would have really sucked if it happened tomorrow night as I have to work up in N Dallas, about an hour away and won't get off till midnight!

I test drove a used 550i Beemer a few yrs ago. They let me take it home overnight.   It was hard to take back the next day.

It was nice buuuutttt...it was that "but" that made me walk away.  Needed a headlight...$150 from Pep Boys!  That wasn't the only "but" in the deal.  I sure did like the way the seats hugged me just like the seats in the $83K Jag I test drove.  *sigh*

I can probably get you some free truck loads, but you would have to pay freightage, or bring a truck down and haul it back. Alternatively, you can do it a bag or two at a time. Good exercise, spread the cost out, and so on.  Hey, here is a better thought - I once put in a 3" x 15 foot cement pad for a tetherball court by hand. You could section off six foot runs and create a concrete driveway. Might take a few years, but think of the pride you would have in driving up yo your doorstep.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] 1975 300D CHEAP

First avoid the dark brown paint at all cost. It actually has something in it that promotes rust. After that the door bottoms and anywhere trim metal meets body metal. Under the carpets should be checked. Of course the battery tray. And around the rocker panels and the usual places in the trunk. That's a 4-body trunk by the way. Huge. Good luck.

That is a sweet 115. too nice for me really. a 75 115 was my introduction to MB some 10 years ago now. ended up selling it to a kid for $1500. three days later he ran the lower front end subframe over a rock up a snowy utah canyon road. No insurance. (Kids!) When I got back into town I bought it back for 300 and swapped the front end subframe with one I had in a parts donor. Sold 'em both to another guy for another $1500. Those were the days. Someone had put a 4 speed manual from a 240D into the 300D and it was just nothing short of a pure blast to drive. I even swapped the blower fan before I sold it the second time. Oh well. I've still got a memory or two from it. Good times.

Guys,

The absolute BEST HVAC system came from BMW on several different chassis, but the E30, in particular, was very well sorted.

It had a dial for temperature, and a dial for fan speed.

Between those were 3 sliders that opened and closed air flow.  All the way right was full open, all the way left was fully closed.  There was a floor slider, a face level vent slider, and a defrost slider.

So, you set the temperature and the fan speed to your preference with the dials.  Then direct the airflow *exactly* how you like it.  Would you like a lot of heat to the feet and just a little to the dash vents?  Put the bottom slider all the way open and open the middle slider half way or less.  Basically infinitely variable air distribution through three simple, extremely reliable, sliders.  Oh, and I forgot a recirc function, too.

When I get to be emperor, I will decree that all cars will be this way.  Within a short time, people will wonder why the hell it wasn't that way all along.  And, since its dead-nuts reliable and simple with really nothing to break or wear out, it never has to be fixed.  No more stepper motors, solenoids, vacuum canisters, etc.

It is a cool car.  Why does the speedo go so high?

I knew I could get people to donate vehicles once I become a non-profit!  It's a win-win for everyone.  I've got to get that paperwork done!

Wish my HVAC buttons looked like that.  I found buttons for mine in a PAP, but I can't seem to get them to stay on.  I haven't tried too hard either. I'm only  missing 2.

Heading to a PAP tomorrow.  Kevin says he needs a bushing for the trans.  Anyone need anything smallish that can be mailed???
