Just got back from driving my 4spd to Reno and back. Car ran excellent. Still working the mileage numbers. Used practically no oil.I was a little nervous because I had just done a major tune up and I could not drive the car to test because of mud and snow, spring thaw. I lucked out the day I left, we had a good hard freeze and the road was hard for driving out on. I replaced all filters, fluids and did the valves. I checked a couple of times for leaks, no leaks. On this trip I had a Garmin and found out how much my  speedo is off. More at slow speeds that fast. I passed 3 big trucks and a Subaru Legacy(must of been someone older than me). Almost got nailed trying to pass the fourth truck. My 240 is pretty slo up hill. Drove almost the whole way with the pedal to the metal. Its totally different than driving a "normal" car, that actually goes when you stomp on the pedal. Got in a couple of arguments with Miz Garmin and as it turned out she was always right, even when I thought she was full of it and I went down a wrong road that seemed right to me, until she told me to turn around and go BACK down the right road. Oh well, I had real maps too.I really hate where the cigarette lighter(power plug) is. I listened to a book on cd and the cord/plug(for the Garmin) got in the way with my cd player so in Reno I wired up a two outlet socket back between the seats and threw the ashtray in the trunk where it belongs. Works good, I wired it to the subwoofer behind the drivers seat, perfect. I found out the car cruises nicely at 70mph. I got it up to about 83mph, really screaming, very low geared. This car is pretty funny to drive after driving a Subaru all summer. This was my first time since last fall, except for a trip to my mail box with chains on. Anyone ever driven from La Grande,Or. to Lewiston,Id.?, Hell of a drive. Second gear for miles over and mostly down a pass. Would not do that in winter with snow. Max

The AC thing , any time you drive the car  use it ~ you can still use the heat , it's very important to operate the AC system often to keep the seals and compressor lubricated .

I LOVE the four speed automatic ! .

Yes, I agree, about sitting. But this car drove great last fall, parked it when it got cold, started it the other day when it ran for 10 seconds. I never used the pump till after it stopped, so if that's the problem it sucked air screwed in.  Car runs super good, maybe the best running car I've ever had, but I hardly even drive it. Last year I just started a new program(cant believe I did not think of this before), up here in the north country we get seasons and basically you live around the seasons. We have a short season of air conditioning. In my240 4-spd I have got the air to work pretty good but don't need it till around July tru September.  In the 240 auto no air, I tried, but its such a hassle keeping one air condition system working in these cars. So last year I starting driving the auto till I need the air. But I cant start driving it till Subaru season is over, which lasts tru March and mud season and break up. We must have about 10 seasons here. The auto is fun to drive, faster, and the trans almost shifts like a manual anyway without a clutch. Also has a sunroof. I can drive the 240's till about late October when it gets cold and then starts snowing, that's when Subie season starts. I might need chains on my 240 to get out tomorrow, hope not. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Oops

So , I get home this afternoon and dig out the used window lift I bought  yesterday and attach it to my test battery , the gear doesn't move the arm properly so I take a closer look at the whole thing and it's bent ~ only the pot metal part , no cracks just bent enough for the gears to not mesh properly .

I thought for a moment about getting a BFH and some blocks of wood and dressing it back into shape then realized that once bent , it's junk having lost the metal's " memory " .

Oh well , $40 + flushed , I'll go looking again .

Then I took the third seat wagon seat belt I bought a few years ago out , unreeled the webbing and washed it all out ~ it looked shiny black and clean but all manner of brownish ick came out as I gently washed it....

When unreeled , the belt is as long as I am tall , might be more than 6' , I hung it up in the shower to dry away from the sun and my dogs .

Then I dug out the 1985 SD injection pump I bought a while back set up a work bench and began cleaning it ~ it's _really_ grotty and has a 1/8" thick hard and dry coating of oil all over it .

A couple hours of scrubbing before I lost the light , bagged it and went to see my Sweet .

The low fuel lamp is lit in the Coupe so I put a can of Diesel fuel , a funnel and flannel strainer in the trunk , some new clear plastic intake screens and a few pairs of rubber gloves ~ I hope to run it clean out of fuel then coast to a safe place to stop , change the intake screen as it now has crud in it again , then pour in my spare fuel through the flannel cloth in my big funnel , hand prime it then motor off placidly to a filling station .

Well see if any of this works .

There was nothing wrong with my engine temps, a rock steady 84C. But, I had this jug of MB Coolant laying around so I thought I would drain and replace the coolant. Well, after locking everything back up - my temps did not stop at 84C, they kept on going to 120+C. I have redrained, replaced the thermostat which did have gunk in it, and I am still hitting 120C. Anyone got any guesses before I start tearing things apart. The radiator is only 2 years old. No problems for several years until I drained the coolant.
